PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The primary purpose of this qualification is to develop the learner's applied competence in more advanced conceptualisation, critical reasoning, problem solving and processes of analysis and evaluation pertaining to the structure, usage and spread of the Afrikaans language, in historical context, and Afrikaans literature in its major genres and pertaining to Dutch literature by way of comparison to Afrikaans. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
The learner should be able to apply linguistic and literary insights to the comprehension and assessment of literary and non-literary texts, to obtain new information on language structure and its uses, and the meaning of literary texts and their relationship to current social problems. The learner should be able to partake in creative writing, to translate texts into Afrikaans and to edit Afrikaans texts.

To enrol for this qualification, prospective learners should be in possession of a BA degree in Afrikaans (and Dutch) from a South African university, be able to read and interpret Afrikaans in all its registers and to have a basic knowledge of the linguistic structure of the language as well as being familiar with key literary texts and their underlying interpretive principles.

Recognition of prior learning

Prospective learners in possession of a BA degree at level 6 plus a minimum of 360 credits in Afrikaans (and Dutch) as major from a South African university will be admitted to the course. Such learners will possess a basic knowledge of the linguistic structure of Afrikaans and Afrikaans literature.

Formative assessment practices that will be implemented


Formative assessment is done by means of assignments, essays or semester tests or a combination of these, in all modules except Kreatiewe Afrikaans, where creative writing, translation or text editing is required.


Summative assessment practices that will be implemented

Integrated assessment, focusing on the achievement of the exit-level outcomes, will be done by means of a written examination of three hours after each sequence of an A and a B module, except in the case of Kreatiewe Afrikaans, where a portfolio of creative writing, translation or edited texts is required at the end of Module B. 

ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
Access to qualifications at a lower level:

Articulation is possible with a Further Education Certificate (FEC), NQF level 4, or an equivalent qualification.

Access to qualifications at the same level:

Learners who are (or have been) registered for this (or a related) qualification at another tertiary institution will be allowed, with the permission of the Dean of Arts, to enter midstream, given that the rules of access have been complied with.

Access to qualifications at a higher level:

Students who have successfully completed the honours course may continue to a coursework master's degree or full dissertation. 

MODERATION OPTIONS 
Use of one external examiner per examination paper for final examination and portfolio.

One external examiner will be appointed for each examination paper, except in the case of modules that may require the expertise of more than one examiner. External examiners will always be drawn from the ranks of experienced staff with at least an MA degree from other universities, except in the case of Kreatiewe Afrikaans, where experienced persons in the relevant practical fields may be selected. 

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
An assessor should at least have an Honours degree, but preferably a higher degree in an appropriate field of study, except in the case of Kreatiewe Afrikaans, where considerable practical career experience may be decisive.

An assessor should be proficient in the subject matter of the learning area in which he/she is assessing and have good interpersonal skills.

An assessor needs to have prior assessment experience in the field of Afrikaans at a tertiary education level.
