| PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
| To provide training in the theory and practice of surgery, including operative surgery and the Applied Sciences. The programme aims to allow certification (according to the requirements of the Health Professions Council of South Africa), as a registered specialist or one of the sub-specialities of Surgery.
An additional purpose is to provide the Health Care sector with an appropriate number of professional with surgical training. |

| MB ChB degree, or any equivalent as recognised by the Health Professions Council of South Africa.
Registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner. Two years of medical practice, one of which would be the internship year, and the other possibly the community service year. Part IA of the College of medicine (FCS (SA) degree. Senior certificate with Matriculation Exemption or Equivalent university admission qualification. |

| ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |

The ability to diagnose, investigate and treat surgical diseases. This would include-pre-operative care, surgery and post-operative care. Integrated assessment: 1. Certification by the programme convenor that the candidate has undergone 18 months training, including 3 months in the Intensive Care Unit, 6 months in Traumas and 6 months in General Surgery and 3 months in a sub-speciality. 2. Certification by the programme convenor of having completed 2 and half years of specialised surgical training, allowing the candidate to sit for the Part II of the FCS (SA) examination. 3. The presentation of a dissertation on an aspect of surgical research in addition to 1 and 2. |
