PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The programmes are designed to enable students to acquire both methodological sophistication and substantive knowledge appropriate to a Humanities discipline.
The Ph D programme encourages the study of substantive concerns, methodological approaches, research and communication skills necessary either for employment or for further independent research.
The degree provides the opportunity for a candidate to undertake independent research and advanced study, under the guidance of a supervisor, building on knowledge gained, in a particular subject area, normally at Masters or equivalent level. The thesis presented must constitute a substantial contribution to knowledge in the chosen subject and may embody only the original work of the candidate. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
(a) A recognised master's degree; or
(b) A recognised honours bachelor's degree or a recognised four-year bachelor's degree, plus at least one year's registration for an approved master's degree; or
(c) A recognised three-year bachelor's degree plus at least two years registration for an approved master's degree; or
(d) In special circumstances, at the discretion of the Senate, an approved bachelor's degree or qualification recognised by the Senate as equivalent.

(a) Critical cross-field outcomes (generic to all teaching and learning)
  • The ability to do independent research and competence in scholarly exposition must be demonstrated by the preparation of a topic related to the major subject.
  • The thesis should represent a significant contribution to knowledge, be presented in a scholarly manner, reveal an ability on the part of the candidate to do independent research of high quality, and indicate considerable experience in using a variety of research techniques. The contents and conclusions of the thesis may have to be defended.

    (b) General outcomes (contextually demonstrated general knowledge, skills and values of the programme)

    The PhD graduate is able to:
  • show an understanding of current theories of the discipline, in addition to demonstrating a high level of competence in a particular subject, and to apply the techniques and findings of independent research so far as they bear upon the subject matter;
  • understand and contribute to the technical and professional literature in the field, and to criticise learned procedures in the light of historical trends and practices in this and other countries;
  • demonstrate both command of the tools for a thorough study of the problems of the area of research and appropriate competence in the use of quantitative and qualitative methods.

    (c) Specific Outcomes, including professional outcomes, contextually demonstrated:

    The graduate will be able to:
    1. demonstrate the ability to address a professional or academic problem with originality and independent thought and thus be able to undertake and direct research and teaching in the field of Political Studies at advanced levels;
    2. demonstrate a satisfactory grasp of the field of specialisation and its relation to cognate disciplines and thus be able to participate in research and teaching in interdisciplinary fields related to Political Studies at advanced levels;
    3. apply scientific and/or humanities discipline principals to practitioner problems where appropriate and thus be able to conduct research and consultancy tasks related to Political Studies.

    INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT
    The integration of skills learnt in the PhD is assessed by means of a thesis not exceeding 80,000 words.

    Evidence of a high degree of scholarship, competence in scholarly exposition, and ability to select, organise, and apply knowledge must be presented by the candidate in the form of a written thesis. The candidate must demonstrate a capacity for independent thought, as well as ability and originality in the application of principles or in the development of a new generalisation under scientific controls. A thesis may be based upon a product or project of a professional nature, provided scholarly research is involved.

    However, in order to be acceptable as a thesis, the professional project must be accompanied by a written discourse demonstrating the nature of the research and including such theories, experiments, and other rational processes as were used in effecting the final result.

    The University of Cape Town has a system of external peer review and evaluation of each course. One of the aspects of the system is an evaluation of the standards and assessment practices of the department.
