PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

The primary of this qualification is to provide qualifying learners with:

Practical Competence: The learners should be able to demonstrate their ability in the following skills, and to demonstrate informed decisions, based on these skills: translation skills, research skills. All skills at this advanced level should demonstrate growth and continuous progression in the field of Greek.

Foundation competence: The learners should be able to demonstrate understanding, analysis and interpretation of: skills, language formulation and communication, analysis of texts. All skills at this advanced level should demonstrate growth and continuous progression in the field of Greek.

Reflexive Competence: The learners should demonstrate the following abilities: innovative and creative thinking: reflective thinking. All skills on this advanced level should demonstrate growth and continuous progression in the field of Greek.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

To enrol for this qualification, potential learners need to demonstrate that they have acquired the intellectual competencies and practical skills for more advanced analysis, translation and discussion of Greek tests, as well as for more advanced communication of knowledge of Greek literature and culture.

BA Hons. Greek (eventually BA Hons, Classical Culture), or an equivalent qualification NOF level 7

Knowledge in place: Sound knowledge of Greek prose, poetry, translation skills, culture and history (or 5 of these 6 elements)

Recognition of prior learning:

All potential learners who claim to have achieved the entrance level of this qualification, through experience, need to apply to the Accreditation Committee of the Faculty of Arts. Recognition will be made according to the Faculty prescriptions and guidelines.

Potential learners who want to be credited for prior learning and or experience for a particular module or modules, need to apply in writing to the Departmental Chairperson of the department which offers the module or modules they want to be credited for, as well as the basis on which they believe the accreditation should be granted.

The principles of RPL are subscribed to and will be implemented in a flexible manner. The principle of flexible and open access will, however, be offset against the provision that this is not to be to the detriment of the potential student, and that his/her chances to succeed must be reasonable.

The Committee will assess learner's competencies in order to determine whether they are eligible for a) access to, b) advanced placement in, or c) recognition of status for this qualification

4. Do basic and medium research work, including research in the fields of Greek linguistics, philogy and culture (history). All skills on this advanced level should demonstrate growth and continuous progression in the fields of Greek.

5. Orally and in writing, communicate at an advanced level (in the case of Modern Greek) and/or read Greek at an advanced level (Ancient and/ or modern Greek). All skills on this advanced should demonstrate growth and continuous progression in the field of Greek.

6. Demonstrate a sound knowledge of specialized literature, and have skills to find and use such literature. All skills on this advanced level should demonstrate growth and continuous progression in the field of Greek.

7. Acquire a sound sensitivity in the fields of Greek aesthetics and culture. All skills on this advanced level should demonstrate growth and continuous progression in the field of Greek.

8. To strengthen his/her responsibility as a citizen through knowledge of Greek democracy (and its evolution)

9. Improve employed skills in the field of languages, translation and (in the case of Ancient Greek) theology. All skills on this advanced level should demonstrate growth and continuous progression in the field of Greek.

10. Display his/her knowledge in the field of Greek language effectively and appropriately. All skills on this advanced level should demonstrate growth and continuous progression in the field of Greek.

Summative assessment practices that will be implemented:

Integrated assessment, focusing on the achievement of the exit-level outcomes, will be done by means of a final assessment of the research dissertation

ARTICULATION OPTIONS

Access to qualifications on a lower level:

Articulation is possible with a BA Hons (Classical Culture).

Access to qualification on the same level:

Access is possible to a MA degree in related fields such as Classical Culture on NQF level 8.

Access to qualifications on a higher level:

D Litt et Phil (Greek) - NQF level 8.

MODERATION OPTIONS

What external examination processes will be implemented?

Internal and external examiners are appointed by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, on recommendation by the Chairman of Dept. of Greek and Latin studies.

How many external examiners/moderators will be appointed for this qualification, and from which type of institution or professional bodies will they typically be?

A minimum of one internal and one or two external examiner(s) appointed from higher or equivalent institutions.

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS

Criteria regarding formal qualifications that assessors should have:

Minimum: MA- degree in Greek or equivalent qualification.

Criteria regarding job or learning area experience:

Academic experience: assessors must have experience in conducting seminars and supervising research students.

Criteria regarding experience of, or exposure to, assessment
An assessor needs to:

have prior assessment experience and/or be trained in assessment practices at higher education level:

a. as part of qualifying as an education and training practitioner; or
b. through a mentoring process; or
c. through on-the-job training; or
d. through additional study of a unit standard or qualification on assessment.

As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006.

This MA with endorsement qualification is registered as a separate qualification only with SAQA. At the Department of Education it is not registered separately, but is included in the registration of the generic MA.
