PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifying learners with:

Practical Competence:
The learners should be able to demonstrate their ability in the following skills and demonstrate an ability to make informed decisions, based on these skills: translation skills; research skills; cognitive skills; designing and evaluating curricula with a Latin focus.

Foundational Competence:
The learners should be able to demonstrate understanding of: analysis and interpretation of skills; language formulation and communication; analysis of texts.

Reflexive Competence:
The learners should demonstrate the following abilities: innovative and creative thinking; reflective thinking in the field of Latin language, culture and literature. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
To enrol for this qualification, potential learners need to demonstrate that they have acquired the intellectual competencies and practical skills for basic analysis, translation and discussion of Latin texts, as well as communication of advanced knowledge of Latin literature, language and culture.

A potential learner will be required to possess one of the following NQF level 6 qualifications:
B.A. Languages, B.A. General, B.A. Law with Latin 3 (i.e. 360 credits: NQF level 6 ) is a prerequisite, as well as competence in using Latin for further studies. The learner should have a sound basic knowledge of Latin, and be able to demonstrate his/her abilities for growth and reflective competence in this field.

Recognition of prior learning:
All potential learners who claim to have achieved the entrance level of this qualification through experience need to apply to the Accreditation Committee of the Faculty of Arts. Recognition will be made according to the Faculty's prescriptions and guidelines.
A potential learner who wants to be credited for prior learning and/or experience for a particular module(s), needs to apply in writing to the Departmental Chairperson of the Department, offering the module or modules the learner wish to be credited for clearly stating the titles of the module(s) they want to be credited for, as well as the basis on which he/she believes the accreditation should be granted.
The principles of RPL are subscribed to, and will be implemented in a flexible manner. The principle of flexible and open access will, however, be offset against the provision that this is not to the detriment of the potential learner and that his/her chances of succeed must be reasonable.

The learners should be able to:

1. Reflect on texts and on the process of problem solving and identification in the field of Latin Studies with full understanding and knowledge of their chosen approach.

2. Solve text critical problems, also in the form of research articles, based on relevant knowledge of theories.

3. Work together with other postgraduate students and lectures in Latin in order to promote research seminars.

4. Do basic and medium research work based on knowledge of research methodology, including the fields of Latin linguistics, philology and culture. Reflect on the success of their own research and the research of others.

5. Read Latin on an advanced level and to communicate their knowledge and science (using visual and technical methods where necessary)

6. Demonstrate sound knowledge of specialised literature and have the skills to find and use such literature.

7. Demonstrate sound sensitivity in the fields of Latin aesthetics.

8. Learners' knowledge of Roman democracy (and its evolution) should be able to strengthen their responsibilities as citizens, allowing them to reflect on democratic values.

9. Display their knowledge in the field of Latin language effectively and appropriately. 

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

1. Display a sound knowledge of handling text critical problems? Will he be able to analyse, translate and discuss such a text?

2. Demonstrate an ability to solve problems and communicate with others effectively, in a written and/or oral manner, on the results of research and the knowledge of theories?

3. Demonstrate acquisition of teamwork skills e.g. in the context of seminars?

4. Have the skills to write (a) research article(s) in an appropriate way?

5. Display a sound translation and communication technique?

6. Reveal detailed knowledge of specialised literature?

7. Display sound aesthetic sensitivity in the field of Latin studies?

8. Have the knowledge and experience to become a better citizen?

9. Display sound language skills in the field of ancient Latin?

Formative assessment practices that will be implemented:
Essays, seminars, translation exercises and presentations.

Summative assessment practices that will be implemented:
Integrated assessment, focusing on the achievement of the exit-level outcomes, will be done by means of four written examinations (of 3 hours each) and one research essay. Examinations will be written during the University's examination sessions (June, November, January).

    Internal and external examiners, appointed by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, on recommendation by the Chairman of Dept. of Greek and Latin Studies.

  • Criteria regarding formal qualifications that assessors should have:
    Minimum: MA-degree in Latin or an equivalent qualification.
  • Criteria regarding job or learning area experience:
    Academic experience: assessors must have experience in conducting seminars and supervising research students.
  • Criteria regarding experience of, or exposure to, assessment
    An assessor needs to:
    o Have prior assessment experience and/or be trained in assessment practices on higher education level:

    *as part of qualifying as an education and training practitioner; or
    *through a mentoring process; or
    *through on-the-job training; or
    *through additional study of a unit standard or qualification on assessment.

    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006. 

    NOTES 
    This BA Honours with endorsement qualification is registered as a separate qualification only with SAQA. At the Department of Education it is not registered separately, but is included in the registration of the generic BA Honours.
