PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The purpose of the BA (Hons) programme is to bridge undergraduate (general, post-graduate knowledge) and skills training. It is intended to provide in-depth theoretical knowledge. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
The entrance requirement for the Honours programme is a Bachelors degree (360 credits) or equivalent. Applicants are selected on the basis of academic performance, relevant experience and specific needs of the community. In some instances candidates are interviewed to clarify details concerning their applicants.

Learners who successfully graduate from the honours programme are able to draw on a broad range of models and theories from disciplines of their choice to inform their work and are competent in using a variety of research methods.

Specific Outcomes:
Having successfully completed the Honours programme, learners will be able to demonstrate:
  • Competence in using a wide range of research methods
  • In-depth understanding of discipline of choice

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    The assessment of the learners' performance is both summative and formative for the Honours programme. Continuous evaluation of course-work contributes 50% toward the final mark.

    Continuous evaluation of course work for the Honours programmes is based on the following:
  • Written seminars
  • Class presentation of seminar papers
  • Peer evaluation and self-evaluation of performance
  • Participation in class discussion and attendance.

    Written examination and a mini-dissertation form part of the final assessment for the Honours programme.

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    After successful completion of the Bachelor's degree, students have access to post-graduate studies at Honours level, and then to the Masters and Doctoral levels in a variety of fields at other institutions of higher learning.

    Specific articulation:
    Students who successfully graduate from the Honours programme will be able to pursue Masters and PhD programmes offered by the School of Social Science, school of Humanities and Cultural Science and the School of Languages subject to individual disciplinary requirements. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    The examinations at the Honours phase are externalised. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Staff members involved in the Honours programme have the Masters qualification as the minimum requirement. 

    REREGISTRATION HISTORY 
    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006.
