The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The diploma in Fine Art is a theoretical/practical, competitive and community oriented course leading to job opportunities such as being an art teacher/educator/facilitator, self employed or working with formal and non formal structures such as NGOs, community organizations towards the promotion of art exhibitions/festivals. These projects will be done in collaboration with NAHESCS/ music/ Creative Writing/ Drama/ Fort Hare/ Alice
Community NGO's / Department of Art and Culture/ Various groups in art related fields etc. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
School leaving certificate/equivalent qualification.

On completion of the programme qualifiers will:
  • Be able to demonstrate a professional competency in studio techniques.
  • Be able to demonstrate with confidence the ability to work with various groups, and organisations in art related fields.
  • Be able to demonstrate the ability to handle workshops and art related community projects
  • Be able to demonstrate skills and knowledge in the broader applied art disciplines
  • Be able to create job opportunities to oneself, those around him and the larger community 

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    On completion of the programme qualifiers will:
  • In studios- application of skills, and the ability to apply their knowledge creatively in a practical manner and these include graphic art mural painting, sculpture making, picture framing, mounting, kiln firing, drawing and carving
  • Work in art related fields such as cataloguing, exhibition marketing, ordering of material, print making, conducting workshops, writing of proposal etc

    Integrated assessment appropriately incorporated to ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved:

    Summative: Examinations
    Formative: Ongoing (portfolio, Practical participation, Exhibition, Research) Tests, Assignments. 

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    Horizontal: Can lead to a student articulating to Communications, Music, History, Poetry, Literature, Theology, and Education.

    Vertical: A diploma can lead to a Degree and thereafter lead to Masters programme. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Internal moderators (up to NQF 5 level)
    At NQF 6 level: external examiners
    External examiner's qualification subject to approval by Senate. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Honours Degree is a minimum requirement, but Masters degree will be preferable. 

    REREGISTRATION HISTORY 
    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006; 2009; 2012; 2015.
