PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The purpose is to accredit the advanced and specialised occupational, academic and professional study of an aspect of education with an emphasis on research. The degree may be taken by dissertation or by a combination of dissertation and coursework. The degree will equip the candidate for employment in a wide range of educationally related positions or for further, independent study for the degree of Ph D in Education. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
The general entrance requirement is (a) a B.Ed (Hons) or qualification of equivalent standard. In addition, if candidates do not have such qualifications, he/she may be admitted on the basis of (b) work experience as it relates to their field of specialisation, which may require some demonstration, or (c) work situation/position, or (d) proven academic competence. In all cases, (a)-(d), candidates may be required to complete complementary or preliminary work in other programmes in order to both demonstrate competence for the higher level and/or to acquire the requisite skills.

    The Masters graduate is able to:
  • Demonstrate mastery in depth of theoretically sophisticated subject matter;
  • Display appropriate proficiency in research methodology;
  • Conduct independent research in a the discipline (or inter-disciplinary field);
  • Communicate verbally and orally with professional audiences associated with research and knowledge production in the discipline;
  • Challenge orthodoxies and redefine existing knowledge, while demonstrating awareness of the nature of knowledge in the field.

    The Masters graduate is able to:
  • Write a research proposal;
  • Design a research project to answer educational questions;
  • Apply a range of advanced research methods to research problems in education;
  • Able to conduct advanced literature searches and critique current literature in the form of a review; and
  • Is familiar with contemporary theoretical and practical issues in the educational studies; 

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Students' achievement of critical cross-field, general and specific outcomes will be assessed through a range of assessment methods. For the purpose of stipulating the criteria by which student performance will be assessed, see the integrative assessment.
  • Examination of course work papers in all competence areas listed.
  • Formulation of a research proposal.
  • Examination of a research dissertation.

    Integrated assessment

    Assessment is by minor dissertation (25 000 words) or full dissertation (40-50 000) depending on whether the programme is done by course work or not. In addition, where the degree is done by course work, all candidates are required to take a non-credit bearing course in research methods.
    The dissertations should demonstrate competence in the following areas:
  • Research problem formulation
  • Integration of literature
  • Appropriate design and execution of research
  • Use of appropriate methods of data collection and analyses
  • Integration of findings
  • Appreciation of the limits of the study
  • Use of the publication and style conventions of the discipline

    The dissertation is subject to external examination. A progress report by the supervisor is submitted at the end of each academic year and, if satisfactory, the candidate is permitted to reregister in the following year.

    The MEd/ MPhil articulates with the PhD in the Faculty of Humanities. When dissertation progress is reviewed at the end of each academic year, the Faculty Board, on the recommendation of the supervisor and the Head of the Department, may recommend that the candidate's registration be up-graded to a PhD and that the period of Masters registration beyond the minimum period of one year be recognised towards the two year minimum period of study for PhD. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    The University of Cape Town has a system of external peer review and evaluation of each course. One of the aspects of the system is an evaluation of the standards and assessment practices of the department. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    The academic staff of the University of Cape Town will be used in a manner, which is consistent with the quality assurance system of the University.
