| PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
| The purpose of the qualification: Diploma in Somatology is to provide the learners with the necessary skills, knowledge and training in order for them to be able to be professional Somatologists in the Health Science and Social Studies field.
The three year, Somatology program is aimed at nurturing and producing Health, Holistic Therapy and Skincare specialists with a strong foundation in the principles and skills of Somatology. The aim of the course is not only to equip the learner for employment opportunities upon graduation, but also to develop the learner`s intellectual, creative, perceptual and technological abilities, thereby allowing for more increasing competence and independence. The learners will be taught to work with a wide range of professional equipment and products. The learner is thus equipped to adjust to the ever changing, Health, Holistic and Skincare environment. The purpose of the qualification: Diploma in Somatology is thus to enable the learner to choose any of the following career paths and employ herself as a successful Somatologist in the Health Science and Social Studies field. Rationale for the qualification: The Diploma in Somatology is designed to meet the needs of those learners who want to progress in the field of Health, Holistic Therapies and Skincare. The qualification will assist those who make Somatology their chosen path. The qualification in Health, Holistic Therapies and Skincare will provide and offer the skills, knowledge and understanding of the field that is essential for qualifying and will allow learners to reach their full potential of advancement. Many different career and work opportunities are linked to and affected by this qualification. They include, but are not limited to: This qualification will help the learner at Level 6 to get the requirements of such a qualification, knowledge and understanding of Somatology, as well as a detailed practical understanding of the Health Sciences and Social studies field. |
| LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
| This qualification assumes that the learner is competent in the language of instruction of the provider. Grade 12 or an equivalent qualification with literacy, communication and numeral skills.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): This qualification may be achieved in part through the recognition of relevant prior learning and through prior experience as a practitioner in one of the sub-fields of Health, Holistic Therapy and Skincare. Providers are required to develop structured means for the assessment of individual learners against the exit level outcomes of the qualification on a case-by-case basis. Such procedures and the assessment of individual cases are subject to moderation by independent-assessors. |

| The learner has a comprehensive understanding and is competent of the following components of the qualification: Diploma in Somatology:
Integrated Assessment: In the assessment strategy as a whole, evidence must be demonstrated through a variety of options: case studies, problem-solving assignments, portfolios of learning materials, projects, written, oral and practical examinations. National and International external examiners assess the Practical and Theoretical examinations. Professional Health, Holistic and Skincare bodies assign the examiners. |
| INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY |
| The qualification: Diploma in Somatology is internationally comparable. The International CIDESCO (Comite International D`esthetique et de Cosmetology) Practical and Theoretical Exam is done by the learners. The learners are assessed by External International Examiners. The learner can after completing the qualification: Diploma in Somatology employs herself in the International field of Health Science and Social Studies and receives International recognition. |

| The language of instruction is Afrikaans/English. The textbooks and notebooks are both Afrikaans/English. The International Exam is English and National Exam is Afrikaans. The majority of learners are Afrikaans, but if problems arise, lecturers in both languages assist learners. |
