PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
The purpose of the Diploma in Accounting and Finance (DAF) is to provide an upgrading qualification at NQF level 5 for accounting graduates and professionals with a prior qualification at lower level (level 5: certificate). Similar to the certificate in Accounting and Finance, it provides a way for managers with pre-NQF qualification (senior certificate) to access the NQF track.

Rationale

Accounting provides a framework for the evaluation of alternative methods of financial practice, based on the assumption that the primary purpose of accounting is to provide information, which is useful for decision making. People interested in the financial or accounting profession must be in possession of a qualification at least NQF level 5 to practice as accountants or financiers and advance successfully in furthering their studies in this field. The diploma in Accounting and Finance provides a qualification for managers to prepare the necessary accounting reports and financial information for management decisions.

The Diploma: Accounting and Finance is to be registered as an interim qualification in the framework of qualifications that prepare its holders for the Bachelor of Technology in Accounting.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
This qualification assumes that the learner is competent in the language of instruction of the provider, and in the general theoretical aspects of accounting, understanding and commitments accomplished at grade 12 level.

Recognition of prior learning

This qualification may be achieved in part through the recognition of relevant prior learning acquired at NQF level 5. Candidates to this diploma with a previous qualification in the field of management and business studies (for example certificate in financial management) may qualify for exemption in a number of courses. They are assessed by means of written or oral examination on courses covered by the previous qualification and for which they seek exemption. For example: a candidate with a prior certificate in financial management would apply for exemption on courses such accounting for manager, management principles, statistics I, business law principles, etc. Prior to the granting of the exemption, by means of a written or oral examination, the candidate must demonstrate a sufficient level of knowledge in those courses through the marks obtained.

Here it is imperative to develop structured means for the assessment of individual learners against the exit level outcomes of the qualification on a case - by - case basis. Such procedures and the assessment of individual cases are subject to moderation by independent assessor.
