PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
The purpose of the Diploma in Marketing and Commerce is to provide an upgrading qualification at NQF level 5 for marketing graduates and professionals with a prior qualification at lower level (level 5: certificate). Similar to the certificate in marketing, it provides a way for managers with pre- NQF qualification (Senior Certificate) to access the NQF track. This diploma prepares its holders to the Bachelor of Technology in Marketing and Commerce.

Rationale

Marketing is the study of the exchange of values between people. It is usually considered to be an activity performed by business organisations; but marketing is an omnipresent discipline in any aspect of life.

The courses offered for this qualification begins with general concepts and terminology used in marketing and finish up with students devising complex strategic marketing plans for specific business enterprises and associations.

People interested in the marketing profession must be in possession of a qualification at least NQF level 5 to practice as consultants, marketing manager and advance successfully in furthering their studies in this sub-field. This diploma provides a qualification for marketing managers to assume the necessary marketing responsibilities in any form of organisation.

The Diploma in Marketing and Commerce is to be registered as an interim qualification in the framework of qualifications that prepare its holders for the Bachelor of Technology in Marketing and Commercial Dynamics.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
This qualification assumes that the learner is competent in the language of instruction of the provider, and in the general theoretical aspects of business economics, understanding and commitments accomplished at grade 12 level.

Recognition of prior learning

This qualification may be achieved in part through the recognition of relevant prior learning acquired at NQF level 5 (certificate). Candidates to this diploma with a previous qualification in the field of management and business studies (for example certificate in financial management, ?) may qualify for exemption in a number of courses. They are assessed by means of written or oral examination on courses covered by the previous qualification and for which they seek exemption. For example: a candidate with a prior certificate in marketing management would apply for exemption on courses such marketing management principles, management principles, business communication, business law principles, etc at first year level. Prior to the granting of the exemption, by means of a written or oral examination, the candidate must demonstrate a sufficient level of knowledge in those courses through the marks obtained.

Here it is imperative to develop structured means for the assessment of individual learners against the exit level outcomes of the qualification on a case - by - case basis. Such procedures and the assessment of individual cases are subject to moderation by independent assessor.

For applicant to register as assessor, the applicant needs:
  • A minimum of 3 (three) years practical, relevant occupational experience.
  • A detailed documentary proof of educational practical training undergone and any other experience gained by the applicant must be provided.
