| PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
| The purpose of this learning programme is to address the dire need for qualified teachers in the Jewish orthodox community in general and the Jewish educational and rabbinical communities in particular.
The learner who qualifies with the Certificate in Jewish Studies will be competent to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the Torah, its application in everyday Jewish life, as well as the history, culture, philosophy and literature of the Jewish people. They will furthermore be competent to assist others in Jewish rabbinical and educational activities. This qualification facilitates access to and mobility within career paths within the field of Human and Social Studies. The Certificate in Jewish Studies forms the foundation for further studies in this field at (to be proposed) diploma and degree level. Rationale for the qualification There is a desperate need to address the fact that Jewish learners are forced to study overseas in order to receive a formally recognised, academic qualification in the field of Jewish Studies. Traditionally, Jewish learners enter a yeshivah to study for up to seven years but do not receive any formally recognised qualifications. They are thus impelled to go overseas if they want to receive an academic qualification in this field or to complete further studies at a local, formal institution. It is the intention of Boston City Campus and Business College, by offering this programme, to contribute towards the retention of South African learners in South African educational institutions. |
