PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

The purpose of the M. Soc. Sc(SW) qualification is to provide qualifiers with Diversified bodies of knowledge, professional skills and value orientations as requisites for both practitioners and administrators. It will also provide opportunity for the application of skills and knowledge acquired in the foundation areas. The objective is to produce a professionally reflective, self-evaluative, knowledgeable and committed graduate for the broader South African society.

3. Assessed as the student develops his/her research proposal and begins the search for relevant literature as well as design the research instrument.

4. Assessed on the basis of the student 's involvement with other professionals beyond social work

Integrated Assessment procedures to ensure that the purpose of qualification is achieved:

Formative Assessment:
Supervised assistance by the promoter throughout the period of study.
Peer evaluation during seminar presentations
Presentations to the supervisor throughout the period of study

Summative Assessment:
Submission of the dissertation for examination.

ARTICULATION OPTIONS

Students with this qualification may move vertically and register for a PhD in Social Work
Horizontally students with this qualification may chose to register for a masters degree in other social science subjects.

MODERATION OPTIONS

The completed dissertation is first scrutinised by the internal supervisor.
Upon the recommendation of the internal supervisor the dissertation is then sent to two externally selected examiners who must be registered members of South African Council for Social Service Professions. The external examiners are also subject to the approval of the Faculty Board and Senate.

Wide knowledge on the particular area of study the student is researching
Assessors also have to be registered with the South African Council for Social Service Professions.
