PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifying learners with intellectual competencies and practical skills in the acquisition, interpretation, understanding and application of logistics management principles. The learner should develop writing and creative thinking skills in the logistics field.

The learner should be able to take important decisions in the context of a logistics organisation, or the logistics function of a company, and to assess any internal or external or external decision impacting logistics management. The learner should also be able to reflect on his/her decisions and applications and to assess the effect thereof in the holistic context of logistics management.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

Learners accessing this qualification should demonstrate their ability to read study material with understanding and interpret relevant literature on a graduate level. Learners must be able to communicate effectively using academic Afrikaans/English in written and oral form. Learners must be able to study independently and to manage their own studies, applying effective time planning.

Learner access will be provided to the learner who is in possession of a baccalaureate degree on NQF level 6 that included a relevant subject as a major. A graduate learner from another university must comply with certain conditions before being admitted to the B Com Honours (Logistics Management) on NQF level 7. Where a learner has not been formally exempted from a prerequisite course for the honours study, the Faculty may, on recommendation of the Chairpersons of the Departments of Transport Economics and Business Management, grant exemption for requirements for admission to the honours study. Applications are finalised by the Chairpersons. Rejected applications must be submitted to the Faculty.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

Recognition of prior learning in the case of learners not complying with the formal entry requirements will be conducted in accordance with the policy and guidelines of the University concerning the recognition of other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning experience. Recognition takes place only where prior learning corresponds with the required NQF-level, and in terms of applied competencies relevant to the content and outcomes of the qualification. Through recognition of prior learning learners may gain access, or advanced placement, or recognition of status, on condition that they continue their studies at this University.

The learners should be able to:

1. Evaluate and apply logistics management concepts and principles and identifying and analysing important issues and problems relating to logistics management strategies and policies, and proposing alternative courses of action and solutions;

2. Work in a team with a variety of role players, including professional and administrative members of the logistics profession, as well as people on the grassroots level related to logistics business;

3. Act responsibly with respect to activities undertaken in the course of their application of logistics management concepts and principles;

4. Plan, undertake and present research in logistic, including gathering, analysing and integrating related information;

5. Communicate effectively, orally and/or in writing, with different role players, applying principles of communication and reflecting on the communication skills applied;

6. Utilise basic management technology appropriate to the logistics management environment;

7. Reflect on the importance and role of the logistics profession, both on a micro- and a macro-level;

8. Identify different learning strategies to acquire and improve the various skills and capabilities required of a logistics manager;

9. Make a contribution to the level of professionalism and expertise in, and effectiveness and efficiency of, the logistics profession; thus positively impacting on the economy;

10. Demonstrate a positive approach to a different communities and a sensitivity for the social, economic and cultural differences and needs, particularly with respect to the distribution of goods, within these communities;

11. Seek employment and entry into the logistics profession, and identify areas in which he/she may establish for himself/herself a specialised career in the logistics profession;;

12. Organise and co-ordinate, effectively and responsibly, resources and opportunities, especially own activities and taking into consideration the financial implications thereof.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

1. The learner must demonstrate an ability to identify, analyse and solve important issues and problems, demonstrating critical and creative thinking about logistics management concepts and principles. The learner must evaluate and, where relevant, correctly apply theoretical concepts and approaches to the logistics management problems, strategies and policies; thus proposing alternative courses of action and solutions. The learner must be able to reflect on the applications and proposals made.

2. The learner must be able to display team ship. The learner must demonstrate an acceptable level of social sensitivity in his/her relationships with others and work effectively in a team by implementing the relevant theory and reflecting on the implementation made. Finally the learner must display a thorough knowledge and understanding of the various role players involved in, or affected by, logistics.

3. The learner must display an ability to act responsibly in interactions with other role players in the logistics profession. The learner must also display an ability to act responsibly in his /her application of logistics management concepts and principles.

4. The learner must demonstrate the ability to plan and execute investigations in the field of logistics, including the correct gathering, analysing, and integrating of information on logistics management issues, by utilising relevant theoretical research principles and reflecting on the research undertaken. The learner must also be able to show that he/she can satisfactorily present the research undertaken.

5. The learner must effectively communicate, in an oral and/or written manner, including the usage of visual/graphic aids, with role players in the field of logistics by applying relevant theoretical principles of communication and reflecting on the application made.

6. The learner must demonstrate an ability to operate necessary management technology, in particular specified computer hardware and software including Internet and databases. The learner must use a computer as well as logistics-related databases.

7. The learner must explain the importance and role of logistics, and the management thereof. The learner must also discern between importance and the roles of logistics at various macro- and micro-levels.

8. The learner must show that he/she is able to identify the different skills and capabilities necessary in the execution of the activities and responsibilities of a logistics manager. The learner must identify different learning strategies or options to acquire and improve these skills and capabilities.

9. The learner must explain the link between the number of logistics professionals and level of professionalism logistics, and the effectiveness and efficiency of the logistics profession and therefore of the economy. The learner must identify various roles that a more effective and efficient logistics profession will have in the economy and the impact that this will in turn have.

10. The learner must demonstrate a positive approach towards various different communities and a sensitivity for the social, economic and cultural differences within these communities, by identifying distribution needs of different communities, taking in consideration their various social, economic and cultural differences and therefore their differing needs and requirements with respect to logistics. The learner must show an ability to apply logistics concepts and principles to make proposals which will improve the circumstances of these communities.

11. The learner must demonstrate acceptable employment-seeking skills for entry into the logistics profession by applying theoretical principles of employment-seeking and career-pathing and reflecting on the application thereof.

12. The learner must display an ability to effectively and responsibly organise and coordinate resources and opportunities, in a prospective logistics job, by applying relevant theoretical aspects and reflecting on the application made, particularly with respect to their own activities. Finally, the learner must demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the financial implications of all organising and coordinating activities undertaken.

Formative assessment practices that will be implemented:

Learners are continuously assessed by means of class assignments, essays, presentations, informal class tests and formal modular tests, in written or oral mode. The learner may also be required to do practical work (independent and in a group during study visits) which is evaluated by assessors. In addition, the learner must also assess himself/herself as well as the work of classmates, and reflect on the dynamics of this process.

Summative assessment practices that will be implemented:

Integrated assessment, focusing on the achievement of the exit-level outcomes, will be done by means of a 3 hour examination per module undertaken for the qualification, towards the end of that module.

ARTICULATION OPTIONS

1. Access to qualifications on a lower level:
The learner will be able to have access to certificates and diplomas on NQF level 5 or 6, or a degree on NQF level 6, in the field of Transport Management or Logistics Management.

2. Access to qualifications on the same level:
The learner wishes to exit the RAU B Com Honours (Logistics Management) on NQF level 7 in mid-stream, i.e. change to another similar degree at RAU or another higher education institution or another B Com Honours at RAU (or another higher education institution), may retain credits for modules that have passed. Learners, successfully completing the B Com Honours (Logistics Management) on NQF level 7 may continue with another qualification, related to the learner's previous tertiary qualifications, at any education institution.

Alternatively, a learner who has registered for the same or another related degree at another recognised higher education institution, or related degree at RAU, can enter this qualification in mid-stream, provided that the curriculum (combination of modules that have been passed) is approved by RAU. The learner may retain credits for the modules that have been passed. However, the learner may not retain all, or may even retain none of, the credits obtained at the other institution.

3. Access to qualifications on a higher level:
The learner has successfully completed the B. Com Honours (Logistics Management) qualification on NQF level 7 will have the opportunity for further study, at RAU or another recognised higher education institution through a masters study M Com or M Phil Or M Tech) in logistics management on NQF level 8.

MODERATION OPTIONS

Both internal and external examiners are appointed by the Dean of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences upon recommendation by the RAU Department of Transport Economics and Business Management. Once the internal examiners have assessed the examinations of the learner, the external examiners will undertake a similar exercise.

For every module of this qualification there will be at least one external examiner or second examiner who will be from within the institution or a related organisation, with suitable qualifications and job related or learning area experience.

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS

Qualified assessors for assessing the learner undertaking this qualification, in terms of foundational, practical and reflexive outcomes per module, will be appointed by the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences of the University, upon recommendation of the Department of Transport Economics, and based on the following criteria:

Assessors for the learner undertaking this qualification should be suitably qualified in the area of logistics management and should be in possession of a relevant Honours degree on NQF level 7.

Assessors for the learner undertaking this qualification should have suitable job and/or learning experience in the areas of logistics management

Assessors for the learner undertaking this qualification should have suitable experience in the field of education and training, particularly with respect to the subject of logistics management. Assessors should also be well informed of what is required of them with respect to the assessment of the learner.
