PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

1) To train and expose competent scientists who have already gained an undergraduate degree to explore more deeply selected topics in current discourse within the discipline of Science which will permit personal intellectual growth and lead to a positive contribution in society.

2) To provide undergraduate student with more specialised skills and proficiency and specialised applied competence that will increase their employability in the commercial and private sector and benefit the quality of the general population.

3) To equip the graduate with competence level required to advance to a higher independent research degree.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

A Bachelor of Science degree and an overall mark of at least 60% in the relevant major course (area of specialisation).

1) Graduate should have an in-depth knowledge of selected specialised current topics within the discipline of specialisation.

2) Graduate should be able to use a variety of chemicals and scientific equipment in an effective manner under minimal supervision, showing responsibility towards the environment and the health and safety of others.

3) Graduate will be able to critically review and assess published scientific literature.

4) Graduate will be able to formulate, design, justify and execute experimental protocols in an endeavour to answer pertinent and relevant questions and suggest possible solutions with a minimal amount of supervision.

5) Graduate will be able to comprehend, analyse and interpret scientific data and present or communicate findings comprehensively and effectively to higher authorities in a professional manner.

6) Graduate should have achieved a level of scientific proficiency which permits a high level of interaction in a research environment

Students are assessed continuously throughout the duration of their degree. Internal assessment of assignments, written scientific reports, seminars, project mini thesis (all formative assessment) and summative examination assessment will be subject to moderation by an external examiner.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

Integrated assessment

Demands a high level of skill and proficiency in both theoretical and practical components. Oral skills will be determined in a seminar related to the research component and audience presentation of this seminar.

ARTICULATION OPTIONS

1) Articulation possibilities exists with the Faculties of Engineering and Health Sciences.

2) External links exist or are being forged with academic institutions within the Kwa-Zulu Natal region. Entry to this qualification in mid-stream with incomplete studies from other universities is possible provided the necessary entry requirements and course contents of the other University comply with the discipline requirements at UDW

3) Whilst a student can alter his/her choice of majors mid-stream this will often necessitate an extra year of study since foundation or pre-requisite courses might not have been taken and completed

4) Articulation with other Faculties such as Law, Arts and Commerce are not possible since such students have not met the entry requirements.

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS

1) Internal assessors: University of Durban - Westville academic staff members who present the programme

2) External assessor: Senior academic staff members from other South African Universities, in the same field of study

3) The appointment of assessors is recommended by the Faculty Board of approval by Senate.
