PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

To enable qualifiers to make a significant contribution to the advancement of knowledge in respect of the law in the selected field of study.

1) An LL.B or equivalent qualification at NQF level 7; or
2) LLM and an exam as prescribed by the School.

1) The qualifier will have the capacity for further autonomous research and study at an advanced level

2) The qualifier will be able to identify, engage and deal with complex legal issues and lacunae and/or contradictions in the law pertaining to the law in the selected field of study

3) The qualifier will be able to autonomously integrate information garnered form both her research and the world of others in the creation of responses that expand and /or redefine existing knowledge in the law pertaining to the selected field of study.

4) The qualifier will be able to experience and conduct full academic and professional communication with others in the field of the study; and

5) The qualifier will be able to make an original and significant contribution to the law in the selected field of study

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

Integrated assessment

1) An oral examination, by a panel of experts in the field of the study, to assess the proficiency of the qualifier in the selected field, in the determination of whether or not the thesis may be submitted for examination; and
2) An examination of the thesis by the promoters and two external assessors all of whom must be experts in the selected field of study.

MODERATION OPTIONS

Experts, both national and international, in the selected field of study from institutions outside of the University will be used in the assessment of the qualification.

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS

The promoters will ordinarily be the academic staff of the University appointed in terms of the institution's quality management system.
