PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
  • Discover, formulate, design and test drug products to improve the health status of society
  • Demonstrate competencies commensurate with highly skilled researchers in the pharmaceutical sciences (i.e. pharmacology, pharmaceutics, pharmaceutical chemistry and pharmacy practice.
  • Apply original advanced research techniques in the pharmaceutical sciences, to initiate and lead research, to disseminate the results of the research, to apply the findings of the research to new situations and distinguish themselves as leaders in the field of the pharmaceutical sciences.
  • Candidates who have completed this programme have the education and training to take a leading role in contributing to national and international endeavours to improve the health status of society, to raise the status of the university of the Western Cape and South Africa as centres of excellence in applied research

    INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT


    The candidate should provide evidence of a specialised and high level of competence, knowledge and integrity. Formative assessment is provided on written and oral research reports. Summative assessment is on the basis of a thesis. The thesis will be presented for examination at least two years (24 months) after registration and preparation in consultation with the supervisor

    The following quality assurance procedures form part of the overall evaluation and accreditation system:
  • At least one internal supervisor/promoter
  • At least three external examiners

    (minimum qualifications for the supervisors and examiners are PhD plus 5 years research experience in the relevant pharmaceutical science)

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    Candidates who obtain a PhD degree in the Pharmaceutical Sciences have access to the postdoctoral programmes at universities who offer this field of study.
