PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
1) Provide researchers with an opportunity for advanced study in the pharmaceutical science and related disciplines.

2) Provide South Africa with researchers with an advanced level of professional or scientific knowledge, insight and expertise in the pharmaceutical sciences.

3) Equip graduates with research skills that will facilitate their employment at senior levels in academic, public/private hospitals, other health care institutions and pharmaceutical industries

4) Improve the health status of society, to raise the status of UD-W and South Africa as centers of excellence in applied research

The candidates should be in possession of a relevant health science or science degree from a recognised tertiary institution with an average mark of at least 60% in the field of study/or topic to be pursued.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
Integrated assessment

Assessment tools include a research proposal submission, ongoing supervision monitoring and feedback at different stages of research process and a thesis submission.

The following quality assurance procedure form part of the overall evaluation and accreditation systems:

    This degree privides access to postgraduate studies at doctorial levels. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    External examiners recommended by staff/supervisiors to school Director.
    External examiners approved by Faculty Board and Senate. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    There must be compliance with University's requirements

    The assessor will be selected on the basis of their recognised expertise in the area of study. Such persons will show evidence of the attainment of at least a Masters qualification and evidence of appropriate teaching and / or research experience.
