PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The purpose of the qualification:

To provide an empowering experience and preparation for delegates, shaping them into strategic thinkers with the ability to manage creatively in a global environment, under conditions of constant, rapid and often complex change.

    The Master of Business Administration graduate, who is normally already a senior manager in an organisation, is able to:

    * Provide a holistic approach to business organisation and its environment through an ongoing project on business strategy which brings together student's own function and other business functions.

    * Focus on problem analysis and solving through application of principles and skills to real business problems

    * Place emphasis on communication and presentation of group and individual work in simulation environments.

    * Facilitate organisation and management of work teams, including delegation and co-ordination.

    * Emphasize the management of resources, including time and budgets

    * Ensure the awareness of health implications of work environment, particularly stress, and ability to use modern technology to minimize this and enhance productivity. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

  • Each year of the programmes's three years consists of ongoing assessments in the form of tests, individual and team projects (and their presentation) and class participation. These assessments constitute the due performance of the student over the year in question. At the end of each year students sit a year end examination. The final year is derived from averaging the Year Mark (DP) and year end examination results.
  • In the final year, over and above the tests and class participation students undertake the a major strategy project which integrates all the work done in the programmes three years to demonstrate their ability to apply the knowledge, skills and appreciation acquired.

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    The programme is currently being "aligned" with other business programmes offered by the School and other Schools in the University as follows:

    * Programme leads to an MBA qualification which is on a continuum consisting of the Diploma in Management Development and Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) Degree course.

    * Conversion of the one year MDP to a diploma programme in Management Development, allows for certain foundation and business modules to be offered at this level and enabling those who qualify to pursue an MBA qualification, with credit given for some of the core foundation modules.

    * Outside the Business School, potential exists to offer programmes leading to two qualifications, namely, MBA (Education Management and Leadership) and MBA (Public Enterprise Management) jointly with the relevant schools. The advantage of this is that students wishing to follow these specializations would initially (in year one) share foundation and business modules with students pursuing a purely business qualification to gain a solid grounding in business principles and practices. They would then be able to select core modules and electives in year two in preparation for specialization in Education Management and Leadership, or Pubic Enterprise Management, as the case might be.

    * At regional level articulation will probably have to be mediated through ESATI. At the moment, no difficulty has been experienced in students being recognized/credited for modules passed at the Graduate School of Business by other institutions. This has been particularly so with respect to University business schools which are members of the Association of South Africa Graduate Schools of Business and Management. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Internal and external examiners are appointed by the Senate of the University 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    The internal assessors for the programme are the module lecturers and internal examiners with relevant academic and business qualifications and experience.

    The external assessors are business lecturers from other university business school and business practitioners with relevant academic qualifications in business education. 

    REREGISTRATION HISTORY 
    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006. 

    NOTES 
    These qualifications will be realigned to what the CHE has termed Category C qualifications to comply with the HEQSF.
