PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

The purpose of the qualification is:

To provide an opportunity for learners to obtain detailed knowledge of the discipline concerned and to create an awareness of the variety of institutional contexts in which it is applied

To give students the opportunity to become acquainted with the practical application of the principles, theories and modules of the discipline in the work environment.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

To enrol for this degree the student must possess a B.Admin or equivalent bachelor degree, with an average mark of at least 60% for the level 3 modules

Certain disciplines may set other pre-entrance requirements, for example, in Industrial Psychology other assessment strategies include performance on an interview, performance in a battery of psychometric tests and knowledge in research methodology.

The Bachelor of Administration (Honours) graduate is able to:

Demonstrate insight and competence in theory and context of the discipline

Demonstrate knowledge and the ability to apply research methodologies and techniques to the discipline concerned as a field of study

Analyse the individual, group and organisation to determine effectiveness of the operation

Assist in planning the careers of individuals and conduct counselling sessions

Have an appreciation of the Human Resource function in an institution, including an understanding of training and training needs of employees in the work place

Develop a manpower plan for the organisation

Understand the importance of Industrial Relations and collective bargaining

Be aware of the legal policies and procedures related to the individual in the work place

Transfer theoretical knowledge to a research project in the work place.

Independently and in groups solve business related decision-making problems pertaining to various practical situations at the hand of case studies

Approach problems in a scientific way

Apply the acquired advanced theoretical knowledge to solve instructional problems

Apply the subject theory efficiently in practical problem solving case studies and the presentation of seminars

Solve advanced management problems pertaining to marketing, finance, human resources, operations and information technology

Do an independent survey, researching a topical problem or business aspect

Present research findings/results and recommendations in a technical report

Critically interpret, analyse and differentiate between areas of inefficiency and efficiency

Present solutions to overcome areas of inefficiency to promote productivity

Show sensitivity for cultural and ethical issues

Express an opinion on practical business problems related to cultural and ethical issues

Apply computer proficiency in problem solving, research methodology and the presentation of the findings of an independent scientific research survey

Integrated assessment

Assessment of module work during semester.

Written examination in the form of applied questions and the analysis of case studies.

The assessment strategies used to indicate the integration of knowledge, skills and attitudes learnt will be tested through: -

Summary achievements of the application of theories in the practical work situation in the form of reports.

Portfolios are related career opportunities in specified areas of the discipline.

Written report or research project submitted by the student to indicate ability to solve problems in the practical environment.

ARTICULATION OPTIONS

The credits from other programmes will make a contribution to the new direction

Student with relevant modules from Business Management and Psychology could move across to studies in Social Science, Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations.

Possibilities for internal articulation exists within the Faculty of Commerce and Administration.

Specialists in the field provide guidelines in the development of the programme to ensure relevance in the workplace.

Academics from overseas academic institutions.

Government: Local, provincial and national officials who provide guidelines for quality and assessment standards.

Professional bodies, such as, the Health Professions Council of South Africa in the discipline of Industrial Psychology and the Public Accountants' and Auditors' Board/South African Institute of Chartered Accountants in the field of Accountancy.

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS

The internal assessor will include the lecturer of the module, the Head of Department and assessors selected in the field of specialisation together with experience and academic qualifications.

The external assessor will be selected in the field of specialisation together with experience and academic qualification from leading institutions.

REREGISTRATION HISTORY

As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006.
