PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The programme aims to provide the students with broad-based theoretical and practical knowledge of Business Management. It also aims to develop in graduates the capacity for lifelong learning and an awareness of the social context in which they will be working, once they enter the business world.

The prerequisite courses for admission to the Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management is a first degree from a recognised university.

    Integrated Assessment

    Students are required to identify the key issues to be addressed in problems within the field of Business Management, and solve such problems using critical and creative thinking. They are also required to relate an organisation to its environment, and to demonstrate an appreciation of the role of the manager in addressing the various business functions in a competitive environment. They must also communicate information and practical findings relating to the broad field of Business Management effectively, in both oral and written forms.

    This is achieved in an integrated form by the preparation and submission of two group case studies in each module. In attempting each case, the students are expected to demonstrate a sound understanding of the business situation portrayed in the case, and how the issues arising from there can only be addressed in an integrated, cross-disciplinary manner. Students must also be able to demonstrate their ability to integrate material relating to the cases from various sources; and their ability to deduce conclusions from the material gathered.

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    The ETQA system for HE is not yet fully developed. Until such time as it is, procedures described under Assessor Criteria will suffice. Work undertaken by the students, counting a minimum of 67% of the marks awarded in each module, is subject to external moderation and/or examination. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Until the HEQC establishes a registration system for assessors in the HET Band, the University of Natal assumes that, on the basis of its rigorous selection criteria for the appointment of academic staff (who also have opportunities for staff development in assessment), staffs are competent to assess students on the modules they teach. This assessment is quality assured via a university system of internal moderation and external examination. External examiners are appointed for their teaching and disciplinary expertise and subject to the approval of Faculty Boards. The University of Natal ruling is that 66 % of all assessments at exit level, i.e. leading to a qualification, are externally examined.

    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006.
