PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

To develop the intellectual and practical ability of the student in the acquisition, analysis, interpretation and understanding of the following areas of Industrial:

Legal aspects of Industrial Relations.

Human resource management

Contemporary labour relations

Trade unions and management

Labour economics and collective bargaining

Conflict management and dispute settlement

Develop a strategy for learning

Collect, analyse and critically evaluate data and information

Organise his/her own time

Communicate effectively using the full range of available technologies in both written and oral form

Candidates are eligible for admission if they are a graduate from this University or any other recognised University provided the candidate has completed any one of Economics III, Industrial Psychology III, Industrial and Labour Studies III, Management III, Political Science III, Sociology III, or Legal Studies III or their equivalent.

Integrated Assessment

Continuous assessment: Class presentations and tests, participation in class discussions and assignments for each module. The combined mark for all of these yields a year mark for each module, which contributes 30% to the total mark for the module.

Final assessment: An examination for each module, which contributes 70% to the total mark for the module.

ARTICULATION OPTIONS

On successful completion of the programme a student is eligible for admission into the Postgraduate Diploma in Personnel Management at the University of Natal and will be exempted from fifty percent of the modules (i.e. Trade Unions and Management, Conflict Management and Dispute Settlement Procedures and Management of Human Resources). In addition, the student will be eligible for admission into other postgraduate diploma programmes in field of business and management at the University of Natal or other institutions.

MODERATION OPTIONS

The ETQA system for HE is not yet fully developed. Until such time as it is, procedures described under Assessor Criteria will suffice. Examination papers and completed scripts are moderated by suitably qualified assessors from outside the University of Natal, Durban. Where appropriate, assessors are appointed on the basis of their specialist knowledge of a particular topic, subject only to their possessing an academic qualification at least equal to that offered by the programme.

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS

Until the HEQC establishes a registration system for assessors in the HET Band, the University of Natal assumes that, on the basis of its rigorous selection criteria for the appointment of academic staff (who also have opportunities for staff development in assessment), staffs are competent to assess students on the modules they teach. This assessment is quality assured via a university system of internal moderation and external examination. External examiners are appointed for their teaching and disciplinary expertise and subject to the approval of Faculty Boards. The University of Natal ruling is that 66 % of all assessments at exit level, i.e. leading to a qualification, are externally examined.

REREGISTRATION HISTORY

As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006.
