PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The qualification shall provide the qualifying learner/s with specialized Knowledge, skills and applied competencies in a specific field of nursing and a basis for further and life-long learning. It shall also improve on the personal attributes of the learner; providing status, recognition, marketability and employability enabling her/him to contribute profitably to the development and enhancement of society as well as the economy of the country. It shall provide recognized credentials for licensing. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Learners who register for this qualification should have met the requirements for level 6 and hold a relevant qualification.

The qualification will also, through submission of portfolios of evidence, recognize formal and informal prior learning and work experience outside the National Qualification Framework 's level 1 to 4, 5 and 6.

INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT TO ENSURE THAT THE PURPOSE OF THE QUALIFICATION IS ACHIEVED

This shall consist of:
1. Formative continuous assessment in the form of written and oral tests, case studies, seminars, assignments, portfolios, simulations, work-place assessments, class-room presentations and proficiencies.
2. Integrated summative assessment in the written and oral examinations including practicals.

ARTICULATION OPTIONS

An honours degree and other certification courses in nursing specialities (commonly termed post basic additional qualifications in clinical nursing). 

MODERATION OPTIONS 
1. A system of second examiners within the institution will be used.

2. A system of external examiners will be used at exit levels. This will ensure fairness and maintenance of standards in and among institutions. 

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
All assessors must have completed a recognized and accredited nursing education and training programme which is at least pegged at NQF level 7 and be registered with the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance Body in accordance with criteria established for this purpose by an official Standard Generating Body. 

REREGISTRATION HISTORY 
As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006.
