PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

PRIMARY PURPOSE

2.1To provide qualifiers with specific knowledge, skills and competence in the field of Prosthodontics that will enable them to register as specialists in Prosthodontics with

the Medical and Dental professional board of the Health Professions Council of South Africa.
2.2To provide South Africa with an adequate supply of specialists in Prosthodontics.

SUBSIDIARY PURPOSE
To provide future teaching staff for the dental schools of South Africa.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

Applicants who want to register for the M Dent (Prosthodontics) degree must be in possession of a BDS or equivalent degree and must be registered as dentists with the Medical and Dental Professional Board of the Health Professions Council of South Africa. Applicants must have had at least two years experience as dentists.

A newly qualified specialist in Prosthodontics must:

1 Know and understand the development of the oral and maxillofacial structures, the stomatognathic and masticatory system and the natural dentition from a bio functional perspective.

2 Know and be able to apply the biological (including anatomical and physiological)
and functional principles to be followed in designing appropriate prostheses for the replacement of the oral and maxillofacial structures.

3 Be able to appreciate the changes in the form and function of the mouth and jaws, brought about by loss of teeth and/or oral and maxillofacial structures and the social and behavioral consequences of this loss.

4 Understand and be capable of informed discrimination when evaluating the merits
of conflicting philosophies as regards the biological and physical rationale for the clinical and laboratory procedures employed in the construction of all types of prostheses.

5 Be able to critically evaluate the influence of prostheses on the remaining soft
tissues and the underlying support.

6 Understand the scope and limitations of all types of prostheses together with the
bio-compatibility and physical properties of all materials used in Prosthodontics.

7 Have an understanding of the socio-economic consequences of the provision of a comprehensive prosthodontic service for all types of communities and in relation to a national oral health policy within a National Health Service.

8 Be able to evaluate the need for prosthodontic intervention and the long-term consequences of technologies used.

9 Be able to evaluate the alternative procedures available for the replacement of missing structures for the provision of a service based on appropriate technology for communities different socio-economic resources.

10 Be able to document and present, for peer review, case reports and reviews of the relevant literature.

11 Be able to conceive, develop, carry out and publish independent research.

12 To know and apply modern learning techniques and strategies, including evaluation and examination techniques.

13Know how to engage in lifelong learning through well developed learning skills.

14 Know the laws and ethical rules and regulations controlling the practice of the oral health professions in South Africa, with specific reference to the scope and nature of dentistry and the specialty as set out by the Medical and Dental Professional Board of the Health Professions Council of South Africa.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

Integrated assessment.

In order to assess whether the exit-level outcomes have been achieved a range of formative, and summative assessments are carried out throughout the four years of study. These include seminars, research projects, practical work, clinical work in the Medunsa Oral Health Centre, case portfolios, literature reviews, assignments and written and oral tests and examinations. The qualifier is evaluated on the aforementioned basis for both depth and width of knowledge and application and through the assessment must have proved that s/he has achieved the NQF level 8A standards.

INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY

Not all countries recognise, train or register dental specialists. In general terms the specialist qualification offered in those countries where specialists are registered can be compared to the Medunsa M Dent degrees. It must be remembered that reciprocity as far as registration of specialist between countries is rare.

MODERATION OPTIONS

The Faculty maintains a bank of external examiner as approved by Council, in Prosthodontics with the necessary knowledge, academic qualifications and
clinical/practical expertise and national and international standing, from which the external examiners are appointed.
Inspectors appointed by the Medical and Dental Professions Board of the Health Professions Council of South Africa inspect the exit-level outcomes of this qualification
on a regular basis to ensure that all the criteria necessary for registration as a specialist in Prosthodontics with the Medical and Dental Professional Board of the Health Professions Council of South Africa are met.

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS

Registered specialists in Prosthodontics on the staff of the Faculty of Dentistry with the necessary academic qualifications and experience are used as internal assessors.

REREGISTRATION HISTORY

As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006.
