PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The primary purpose of the qualification is to provide:

1. Qualifiers with specialized knowledge ,research skills and applied competence in a
specific field of natural sciences that provide support unities for continued personal
and intellectual growth, gainful economic activity and rewarding contributions to
society.

2. South Africa with significant numbers of responsible qualified people in specific
fields of natural sciences in order to ensure that the national leadership base of
innovative and knowledge-based economic and scholarly activities is widened. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
This qualification recognizes, through the submission of portfolios of evidence ,the
formal/non-formal prior learning which learners who register for the programme leading
to the award of the qualification bring to the learning situation:

1. BSc Honours degree in the relevant field

2. Level 7a equivalent qualification in the relevant fie.ld

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    A system of second examiners within the institution will be used, together with a system of external examination at exit levels to the qualification. The Faculty maintains a bank of external examiners as approved by Council, with the necessary knowledge, academic qualifications, clinical/practical expertise and national and international standing, from which the external examiners are appointed for each year. Where professional or statutory bodies are involved in determining the curriculum, they will also be involved in moderation. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    All the academic staff members of the Faculty with the necessary academic qualifications and experience will be used as internal assessors. 

    REREGISTRATION HISTORY 
    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006.
