PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

Provide graduates with an opportunity for advanced study in the medical sciences and related disciplines

Provide South Africa with graduates with an advanced level of professional or scientific knowledge, insight and expertise in the Medical sciences

Equip graduates with research skills that will facilitate their employment at senior levels in academia, public/private hospitals, other health care institutions and medical industries

Improve the health status of society, to raise the status of UD-W and South Africa as centres of excellence in applied research

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

The candidate should be in possessions of a relevant health science or science degree from a recognised tertiary institution with an average module mark of at least 60% in the field of study or topic to be pursued.

1. Write research proposals that indicate that the learners are able to identify a problem and subsets of problems in Medical Science and formulate research proposals

2. Formulate hypothesis

3. Select and utilise research instruments that are relevant in the research of problems in Medical Science

4. Select and use appropriate data analysis methods to interpret the findings of an investigation

5. Conduct fieldwork during the actual investigation

6. Report the findings of the investigation, and formulate recommendations that emanate from the findings

INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT

Assessment tools include a research proposal submission, on-going supervision monitoring and feedback at different stages of research process and a thesis submission

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS

1. Compliance with Universities requirements

2. The assessors will be selected on the basis of their recognised expertise in the area of study. Such persons will show evidence of the attainment of at least a Masters qualification and evidence of appropriate teaching and or research experience.
