PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Provide an opportunity for candidates to develop skills to do independent research in selected areas in Library and Information Science. This will assist the South African nation with highly qualified people who are competent to do research

Students with an M Bibl degree or equivalent will be admitted to this programme

    A successful candidate will be able to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the selected modules as well as the ability to do research on a topic within that subject.

    All forms of assessment are moderated by external examiners, appointed by Senate on recommendation of the Department of Library and Information Science 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    All forms of assessment are done by examiners appointed by Senate on recommendation of the Dept. of Library and Information Science. An assessor will have at least a Doctorate degree in LIS subject area and have sufficient experience of supervising doctorate theses
