PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
This qualification will provide an exit point for students in the various structured master's programmes offered by the Faculty of Arts

The purpose of this programme is to enable candidates to acquire an in-depth knowledge of specified disciplines within the faculty of Arts. This required a broadening and deepening of a student's knowledge in the disciplines as specified. This is achieved through course work leading to detailed literature surveys 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Unless otherwise determined by Senate:
  • A candidate must have obtained an Honours degree with an average mark of 60% to gain entrance to the Postgraduate Diploma
  • Additional requirements may be determined for specific programmes

    Recognition of prior learning:

    A candidate with an equivalent qualification, prior learning and other forms of relevant experience may, subject to the discretion of Senate, also be admitted to the Postgraduate Diploma

    A successful candidate will be able to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the selected subject. The candidate will be able to express knowledge and generic research skills (delimitation, literature searches, logical analysis, balanced interpretation, structuring and expressing, abstract thoughts in a logical and coherent way, the consistent use of a system of references, etc) in this area in an integrated, logical and coherent manner through written assignments

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    The Postgraduate Diploma provides an exit point for students registered for a structured Master's programme in the Faculty of Arts

    The Postgraduate Diploma does not lead directly to doctoral research in the discipline as specified. Further proof of the development of research skills will be required before admission to doctoral studies may be considered 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Each module will be examined by an internal examiner appointed by the UWC senate and will be moderated by an external examiner, also appointed by the UWC Senate. The moderating body for this qualification is the Council for Higher Education

    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006; 2009; 2012; 2015.
