PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

Provide graduates with inter-disciplinary knowledge and applied competence in the scientific and health aspects of indigenous herbs that have medicinal and nutritional value. This AHS programme will create enormous value by:

1. Increasing intellectual capacity in the rapidly growing Alternative Health Industry, that critically lacks scientific expertise related to the safety, efficacy and mechanisms of action of herbal medicines and nutritional supplements

2. Producing graduates who can innovatively develop and sustain the Alternative Health industry, because they recognise the importance of research in this area.

3. Providing high quality graduates, for the expansive Alternative Health Industry, whose relevant scientific training underpins their strong market value, and competitive employment prospects

4. Developing a research capacity that will stimulate growth in the numbers of PhD students and specialist scientists between universities, the Alternative Health Industry and related economic sectors on a national, continental and global level.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

1. An MSc with Basic Science, Health Science, Education, Engineering, Horticulture or Landscaping concentrations.

2. An MSc in Applied Herbal Sciences or a related field of study

3. An M.Tech in any of the abovementioned specialists, and a minimum of 2 years' appropriate experience.

Recognition of prior learning:

Furthermore, candidates who have extensive experience or other qualifications evaluated by the Faculty as equivalent, may, at the discretion of the university senate, be accepted into the programme
