PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

The programme is designed to equip people in business, government, police, NGOs, and those with in the educational system, with the necessary knowledge, skills and strategies to successfully address moral problems in their fields of expertise. It is designed also for a student who would like to study or further their studies in Applied Ethics.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

For entry into the Honours phase of the programme, 360 credits obtained in the programme (for a BA Hons Applied Ethics degree); or an Honours qualification in a correlate subject (For Diploma in Applied Ethics at Honours level). The Diploma at Honours Level student will be required to complete two additional top-up courses from the existing 3 year programme; Moral Theory and Practical Ethics. Apart from the above, there will be no difference in the content of the programme between the two courses (Honours and Diploma courses).

Critical Outcomes:
This programme will provide competency in understanding, analysing and resolving moral problems prevalent in today's world. More specifically the programme will provide understanding and skill in handling moral dilemmas within business, biomedicine, cultural and developmental spheres, economics, education, the environment, gender, government, information science; the law, the media; the police, politics, public administration, religion, science, social work, and so on.

The general objectives of this programme are:

To raise a student's sensitivity to situations requiring a moral response, or that have potential to harm individuals, organisations, or society, by providing practical (real-life) cases and conflicts that call for moral decisions.

To provide the theoretical basis for moral decision-making. - To provide decision-making procedures for analysing ethical dilemmas and situations.

To instil in each student a readiness and a willingness to accept moral responsibility for his or her decisions.

Specific Outcomes:
The student will be able:

To identify the moral issues/problem(s) that need to be resolved and their potential for harm;

To identify the primary and derived moral principles appropriate to the problem;

To discover the relevant facts of the case and to identify the stakeholders (those who are affected by the decision);

By applying ethical principles to facts, to mount a strong morally defensible argument, decision, or policy;

Or to formulate a range of alternatives outcomes from a moral perspective; or to suggest courses of action and policies to resolve the current problems;

To recommend morally compelling long-term systematic, organisational and societal policies and strategies to prevent a similar situation arising in the future.

Where there is moral conflict, the student will know how to mediate between opposing views.

Where moral conflict remains, the student will know how to arrive at a morally sensitive judgment in order to resolve the conflict.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT
At every level, essays will be required and assessed.
Students will be given case studies and 'on-site' assignments on which they will be examined in both written and oral form. Seminar papers, essays, case studies, analysis exercises, examinations and the research essay will form part of the final assessment.

ARTICULATION OPTIONS

General articulation:
Successful students will have access to further studies at other institutions of higher learning. Graduates will have access to postgraduate studies at Masters and Doctoral level at other institutions of higher learning.

Specific articulation:
Students will be able to pursue further studies in higher levels in all correlate disciplines. Graduates will be able also to pursue higher degrees in the Applied Ethics programme.
