PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
1. Produce a cadre of midwives who are equipped with advanced knowledge, skills and competencies in Maternal and Child health.

2. Provide South Africa with professional midwives who are able to meet the maternal and child health needs of the country and contribute to reduction of alarmingly high rates of maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity (National Maternal, Child and Women's Health Directorate). 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Four year nursing degree or equivalent, and a minimum of two years working experience in a midwifery and or neonatal setting.

Further education certificate or equivalent, including a basic diploma in Midwifery recognised by the relevant professional accreditation body and a minimum of five years working experience in a midwifery or neonatal setting, which meets the criteria for admission

The purpose of the programme is to produce a nurse/midwife practitioner and team member who has acquired advanced scientific knowledge and skills to be able to:
  • apply advanced theoretical knowledge in Midwifery settings
  • engage critically with current Midwifery issues.
  • undertake research
  • apply advanced Midwifery skills
  • lead and co-ordinate midwifery and neonatal services at district level
  • plan and implement efficient and effective staff development programmes
  • develop, implement and evaluate programmes to ensure quality assurance in a midwifery setting
  • conduct a clinical research project and implement research findings
  • maintain ethical standards of midwifery practice.

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Integrated assessment

    Continuous evaluation by assignments, written academic articles, case studies and seminar presentation. Final evaluation by clinical examination to test proficiency. Research thesis as summative evaluation for Master degree. Evaluation strategies will capture integrated theory and practice and will reflect exit competency at each relevant stage. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    Learners who have completed the programme and obtained a 60% plus final mark may proceed with the Doctorate Programme in Nursing. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    External moderation of the course and assessment of student progress will be done by external moderators appointed by the Department of Nursing on an annual basis and moderators appointed by the SA Nursing Council on a five year review basis. Internal moderation will occur through the Department of Nursing, the Faculty of Community and Health Sciences, and the University Senate. The moderation bodies are both the Council for Higher Education and the Interim Nursing Council of South Africa 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    An assessor must be a registered member of the SA Nursing Council and should have at least an equivalent or a qualification beyond the level to be assessed.
