PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
This qualification includes the various specialisations in Education. Please refer to "Notes" for details on the specialisations.

To accredit an upper-level qualification for researchers in the field of Education, Training and Development. It continues and completes a postgraduate programme for academic and occupational purposes. Since it is an academic qualification, the qualification focuses on developing competence that can be applied to rigorously researched issues in a learning area/subject/discipline. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
A recognised tertiary qualification at NQF level 7 or equivalent, is required.

Students are admitted to study the Postgraduate Diploma only after obtaining the B.Ed. (Hons.) degree.

1. The Postgraduate Diploma is open to candidates who wish to pursue research in education but who do not satisfy the entrance requirements for the Masters degree in Education. The area of research should be one in which the candidate is deemed to be qualified and must be relevant to education.
2. Candidates must be in possession of an Honours degree or a qualification deemed by the Senate to be the equivalent.
3. Candidates must satisfy the Faculty regarding their competence to pursue the educational aspect of the proposed research.
4. Information regarding the various structured Master's degree courses offered in the Faculty is available from the Faculty officer.

Qualilfied education and training researchers will have demonstrated the ability to:
1. Formulate a research question

2. Engage critically with the knowledge base of the field of study

3. Critically read research studies in the area of a research question

4. Develop a research design to validly and reliably collect and analyse data pertaining to an identified research question

5. Select, justify and employ research methodologies appropriate to address research questions

6. Design an appropriate and defensible theoretical framework within which to embed a research question

7. Use technology to collect data and to assist with the analysis of data

8. Respond to ethical issues involved in research

9. Present the research question, theoretical framework, the research methodologies employed, the data and analysis, research findings, interpretations, conclusions and recommendations in a coherent text of acknowledged academic value

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
Qualifying students are able to:

4. Collect, analyse and critically evaluate information on education

5. Use science and technology effectively and critically

8. Explore further education and career opportunities that will add value to their current context

Integrated assessment:
  • Assessment of the Master's by full thesis is by written thesis and viva voce examinations
  • Assessment procedures for the Master's by coursework include assignments, syndicate and seminar work, written and viva voce examinations and a written mini-thesis
  • Assessment criteria derive directly from the exit level outcomes

    Examination
    (i) A candidate may take the degree by thesis, or by thesis and coursework, in which case each component is to comprise 50%. A candidate shall earn a minimum of 240 (SAQA) credit points for the award of the degree. In the case of a degree by thesis and coursework, each component is to comprise a minimum of 120 credits for the award of the degree.
    (ii) A candidate who completes only the coursework (120 credits points) qualifies for the Post-graduate Diploma in Education.
    (iii) Candidates must comply with such assessment procedures and examinations as may be determined and approved by Faculty Board.
    (iv) Unless the Faculty Board determines otherwise all coursework assessment procedures and examinations shall be completed by the end of each module.
    (v) The Senate of the University of the Western Cape appoints at least on einternal and external examiner for each module.
    (vi) In order to complete successfully the Post-graduate Diploma in Education, a candidate must obtain a final mark of at least 50%for each module.
    (vii) The post-graduate Diploma in Education may be conferred cum laude where a candidate has obtained an average mark of at least 75% for the coursework. 

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    The qualification adds value by providing status as a qualified education and training researcher, specifically by opening up opportunities for further education in the field. The qualification leads to the D.Ed. or D.Phil. at NQF level 8 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    The recommended moderating body for this qualification is the Higher Education Quality Committee of the Council for Higher Education. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    The staff in the Faculty of Education will act as assessors within the quality management system of UWC. This quality management system includes external assessors from other universities.

    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006; 2009; 2012.
