The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The purpose of the qualification is to provide an opportunity for candidates to develop skills to do independent research in History. This will assist the South African nation with highly qualified people who are competent to do research.

1- Display expert, highly specialised scholastic and advanced research skills in History discipline and be able to perform complex and highly advanced procedures across disciplines in highly specialised and unpredictable contexts.

2- Possess in-depth knowledge in a complex and specialised area of History, be capable of information processing at the level of generation, evaluation and synthesis of highly abstract information and concepts; and be capable of creating responses to abstract problems that expand or redefine existing knowledge

3- Communicate effectively, in both oral and written modes, with peers and the broader History community using the appropriate structure, style and graphic support.

2 In-depth knowledge in a complex and specialised area of History is demonstrated, information is processes at the level of generation, evaluation and synthesis of highly abstract information and concepts; and responses to abstract problems are created that expand or redefine existing knowledge
3 Oral and written modes of communication using the appropriate structure, style and graphic support are effectively demonstrated with peers and the broader History community.
4 Responsibility for planning, resourcing and managing is demonstrated and all aspects of processes within complex and unpredictable contexts are optimised
5 Complete accountability for determination, achievement and evaluation of personal and/or group output is demonstrated.

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    This qualification articulates vertically with all qualifications in the same discipline at level 8 of all other higher education institutions. It will be the additional criteria that these other higher education institutions will apply which will determine whether students from the Faculty of Arts at the University of the Western Cape will be admitted to the next qualification at other institutions. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    The recommended moderating body for this qualification is the Higher Education Quality Committee of the Council for Higher Education. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    All forms of assessment are done by examiners appointed by Senate on recommendation of the relevant departments in the Faculty of Arts. An assessor will have at least a Doctorate degree in the relevant subject area and have sufficient experience of supervising doctorate theses.

    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006; 2009; 2012; 2015.
