PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The purpose of this programme is to enable candidates to acquire adequate research skills in Development Studies within the Faculty of Arts. This requires attention to the following three important aspects:
  • A broadening and deepening of a student`s knowledge in the Development Studies disciplines as specified. This is achieved through course work leading to detailed literature surveys.
  • The development of basic research skills.
  • The writing of a mini-thesis on the basis of an accepted research proposal. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Students with an Honours degree or equivalent (NQF level 7) will be admitted into this programme.

    Recognition of prior learning:
    Prior learning and/or relevant experience will be recognised for entry into this programme where applicable and subject to Senate`s discretion.

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    The structured master`s degree leads to doctoral research in the discipline as specified 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Examination at this level will be moderated through an external examiner appointed by Senate. The moderating body for this qualification is the Council for Higher Education. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    An assessor will have at least a Master`s or a Doctorate degree in the appropriate subject plus a minimum of three to five years` experience in teaching the course
