PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The purpose of the programme is to train the future generation of biomedical engineers who will make a significant impact on healthcare delivery in South Africa. It is a post-graduate programme, open to graduates with a first degree in engineering, where the intention is to provide students with the necessary knowledge in health science so that they can apply their engineering skills to solve important medical problems. The qualification is recognised by the Health Professions Council of South Africa for registration as a biomedical engineer. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
A Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree, or an equivalent four-year qualification that is acceptable to the University of Cape Town, is the basic requirement for entry into the programme.

An honours degree, with the equivalent coursework to the engineering degree, including courses such as mathematics, computer science, and physics, may also be considered for entry.

Senior certificate with Matriculation Exemption or equivalent university admission qualification.

    INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT

    Evaluation of the student is based on:

    1. Classroom participation
    2. Homework assignments
    3. Self-directed learning, including a wide range of readings and a formal literature review
    4. Laboratory projects with a formal report
    5. Mid-stream and end-of-semester comprehensive examinations
    6. Presentation of two public seminars
    7. Preparation and presentation of a research protocol, with an oral defence, prior to commencing the thesis
    8. Submission of an MSc thesis which is examined by two experts from outside the University of Cape Town.
