| PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
| This educational programme is designed to be an exemplary model of interdisciplinary post-professional education. The programme is justified by numerous changes in the Health Care environment and in educational directions in professional education.
The aim of the course is to provide for health care professionals and others interested in health care, a systematic approach to developing a deeper understanding of, and enhanced effectiveness in, dealing with the theoretical and practical aspects of ethical decision making in health care. The emphasis in the course on potentially universable ethical considerations is supplemented by the study of sociological, cultural and historical conditions of contextual importance to the application of theory. |

b) The ability to work systematically and independently in solving problems. c) The ability to identify, describe, explain and discuss ethical problems arising in the everyday practice of medicine and in relationship to medical research. The ability to search the literature, to provide appropriate literature in support of arguments on a range of ethical problems. The ability to function as a consultant on ethical issues in clinical practice and to help guide practitioners towards the best ethical decisions. The ability to be a resource for Health Care institutions in addressing ethical dilemmas. The ability to contribute to ongoing scholarly development in Bioethics in South Africa. INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT i) In course assessment Comprise evaluation of student participation in seminars, 6 short essays per module, and 2 long essays per module. The in-course assessment comprises 75% of the total marks. These assessments evaluate the candidate's understanding of the practical, theoretical and trans-disciplinary dimension of ethical issues. ii) A mini-dissertation of approximately 10 000 words comprises 25% of the marks. This allows assessment of critical thinking, analytical and writing skills. The overall pass-mark is 55%. |

| The University of Cape Town has a system of external peer review and evaluation of each course. One of the aspects of the system is an evaluation of the standards and assessment practices of the department. |
| CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS |
| Those who teach the modules make all the assessments of the students. Teachers will comprise staff at the University in Senior Lectureship or above, in Philosophy, Medicine, Law and Public Health. All assessors will hold an academic appointment which may be part-time or full-time. |
