PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

To provide students with a basic training in research methods and procedures appropriate to the discipline concerned.

To produce students for the economy with the capacity to work in teams which must carry out research in the discipline concerned.

Minimum of a Bachelor's degree of four years duration, or its equivalent. The applicant must have had some prior exposure to research, must display the capacity for analytical thought and must have good communication skills.

INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT
In the case of part coursework, park dissertation programmes, where the outcome of the coursework is sufficient theoretical understanding to undertake the research, both summative and formative evaluation methods are used for the coursework (examinations and projects). The evaluation of the dissertation is formative in character and synoptically evaluates all outcomes. In the case of degrees by dissertation only, the evaluation of the dissertation is formative in character and synoptically evaluates all outcomes. In each case, examiners submit formal reports on the thesis, which are made available to the candidate.

MODERATION OPTIONS

The University of Cape Town has a system of external peer review and evaluation of each course. One of the aspects of the system is an evaluation of the standards and assessment practices of the department.

The academic staff of the University of Cape Town will be used in a manner which is consistent with the quality assurance system of the University.
