PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
The main purpose of the programme is to develop skills and specialised knowledge in a particular discipline, as part of a vocational training for professional scientists, in many cases the M Sc by coursework is management-oriented or more specifically professional than the M Sc by thesis, which is seen as more research-oriented. Many employers in South Africa require a M Sc as the minimum qualification for working in a particular field. Thus, the programme will embody aspects of practical training essential for functioning as a senior scientist in a work environment.

The second purpose is to equip students with the tools necessary for them to be professional academic practitioners in their particular disciplines, again, most South African Universities insist on an M Sc level qualification or evidence of attainment of this standard, as the minimum entry standard for Ph D training. Accordingly, the programme must embody aspects of academic training such as understanding of the scientific literature as well as furtherance of the requirements of literacy, numeracy and computer literacy necessary for scientific research.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS QUALIFICATION:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
