EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES
1. Apply landscape design principles and skills to the design and implementation of landscape projects.

2. Identify, classify and describe characteristics of plants so that recommendations can be made toward the placement and utilisation thereof.

3. Maintain plant material to ensure optimum utilisation.

4. Apply applicable business skills within a landscaping enterprise.

5. Communicate effectively with clients and personnel.

Specified outcomes:

1. Analyse, plan and design a selected range of landscape projects interpreting site information, environmental influences, client requirements and material selection using appropriate graphic representation techniques.

2. Identify and classify a selected range of plants and classified correctly.
  • select and utilise plant material, applying design principles and environmental considerations.

    3. Typify and modify soil to obtain optimal growing conditions and evaluate soil through plant growth symptoms.
  • Typify and apply different types of fertilisers and soil amendment.
  • Select and apply the most suitable equipment and techniques to maintain plant quality for a typical range of plants used in the landscape industry.
  • Identify and classify pests and weeds and select and apply most appropriate method of pest and weed control.
  • Select, operate and maintain the machinery and equipment utilised to ensure optimum plant quality.
  • Select, install, and maintain different types of irrigation systems to ensure optimum plant growth.
  • Analyse environmental factors impacting on plant growth and apply appropriate techniques to manipulate these influences to ensure plant maintenance.

    4. Apply management methods and procedures in the organisation of all relevant resources within a landscape enterprise.

    5. Select and apply appropriate verbal, written and multi-media communication methods.

Critical outcomes embedded in the specified outcomes:

The learner will be able to demonstrate the following capabilities:

identify and solve problems within the landscape industry and take responsible decisions

work effectively with others as part of a team in a professional landscape design or contracting enterprise

collect, analyse and organise landscape related data and information and evaluate it critically.

communicate professionally with personnel and clients

use scientific knowledge effectively within the context of the environment

contribute to the full personal development of the individual by exploring education and career opportunities.

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
    1. Site information is recorded accurately.
  • The design process indicates clearly a logical interpretation of relevant influences, and a design solution that balances aesthetic and functional criteria.
  • The graphic representation techniques have been utilised accurately and effectively in illustrating the requirements of the relevant design stages.

    2. Botanical keys are correctly utilised to identify and categorise a selected range of plants.
  • Plant characteristics are applied correctly to classify plants according to their environmental and aesthetic potential.
  • Site information is recorded accurately and graphic presentation techniques used effectively.

    3. Selected soil samples have been collected, analysed and graded correctly and modified to obtain optimal growing conditions.
  • soil amendments and fertilisers have been identified and classified correctly.
  • plant quality has been maintained to ensure a predetermined standard.
  • pests and weeds are identified correctly and most effective control measures have been selected and applied within the framework of environmental influences and safety precautions.
  • Machinery and equipment have been selected, used and maintained correctly following prescribed safety guidelines.
  • Different types of irrigation equipment have been identified correctly and the most effective system selected, installed and maintained.
  • Environmental influences have been identified and effective reclamation and sustainable practices have been selected to optimise plant growth.

    4. Methods and techniques for drafting budgets, costing, implementation projects and time utilisation have been validly demonstrated.

    5. Appropriate communication methods have been used efficiently in communicating with personnel and clients.

    Integrated assessment:

A combination of formative assessment (projects, assignments, practical activities, laboratory work, written tests, practical tests, group discussions) and summative assessment methods (written examinations, practical examination, a portfolio of practical work) are compiled and assessed. A graduate will be able to identify, assess, explain, interpret, discuss, compare, analyse and solve landscape problems. Assessment practices should integrate these elements, combining appropriate application of knowledge, skills and values to signify competence in a learner. Formative assessment will be continuous.

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS
    Vertical articulation: BTech: Landscape Technology

    MODERATION OPTIONS
    SERTEC requirements will apply.

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS
The current SERTEC requirements regarding examiners apply.

    NOTES
While South Africa still had Technikons, all of their qualifications were registered under the Committee of Technikon Principals. After the Technikons became Universities of Technology or merged with Universities, the qualifications were registered under each of these institutions, and the CTP qualifications fell away (hence the end date of 2006, above). Where relevant, replacement information is s
    hown in the table above.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS QUALIFICATION:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
