The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

To become conversant regarding the execution of independent basic and applied research. Be able to formulate and defend a research project proposal. Be able to write a dissertation and compile from it a research article based on independent research in the field of Microbiology.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
Integrated assessment

Progress is continuously monitored. The final mark allocated for the degree is based on the evaluation and assessment of a dissertation based on independent research, a research article based on the dissertation and an oral examination conducted by an examination committee constituted by all academic staff and the external moderator(s) which will allocate the final mark after the oral examination in the presence of the examination committee. 

ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
The qualification will provide entrance to enrol for the PhD degree at the University of Zululand as well as other institutions of tertiary education. 

MODERATION OPTIONS 
At leat one external moderator who should have a PhD and research experience in the field of study or equivalent qualification as approved by the senate on the recommendation of the faculty board. 

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
At least two internal assessors for each course of whom at least one should have a Ph D or equivalent qualification as approved by the senate on the recommendation of the faculty board.
