The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
This qualification will produce an expert in an aspect of zoology such as, aquatic biology, aquatic ecology, ecophysiology or ecotoxicology. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
A Masters degree in the field or associated field or relevant experience equivalent to a Masters degree in biological science.

Expertise in an aspect of the field under study as demonstrated by a detailed research thesis which has passed expert critical review. 

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
Integrated assessment

1. Critical review of a detailed research thesis representing original work.
2. Assessment of oral reporting on aspects of the research.
3. Assessment of regular written reports on sub areas and sub problems of the research topic.
4. Regular review of progress by the supervisor.
5. Regular review of practical competence in conduct of the research.
6. Assessment of seminar presentations on aspects of the work in progress.

MODERATION OPTIONS 
All research theses will be moderated by at least one internal examiner (who is not the promoter) and at least two external examiners. The external examiners will be attached to a higher education institution, to a research institute or to an institution that specialises in aspects of the biological sciences. In all cases, moderators will be suitably qualified in the relevant field of study. 

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
Assessors will have at least a Ph D or Doctorate in the field or in a related field.
