PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

This qualification provides learners with a broad understanding, in content, application and epistemology, of the major functional areas of business as well as a breadth of perspective, enabling them to contribute effectively to the wider corporate activities and decision making processes of any organisation (public or private). A practitioner who has achieved this qualification will have also mastered methods of research in a chosen field or discipline of business, and will be capable of specialised practice within a business management-based or supported career. Learners will also be in a position to conduct further studies at doctoral level in South Africa, the United Kingdom or the British Commonwealth Countries.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

A recognised Honours Degree in a relevant discipline;
Or

Recognition of prior learning:

A recognised Bachelor's Degree with managerial experience and relevant prior learning deemed to be of equivalent standing to an Honours Degree;
Or
A suitable postgraduate diploma with managerial experience and relevant prior learning deemed to be of equivalent standing to an Honours Degree;
Or
Professional qualification(s) with managerial experience and relevant prior learning deemed to be of equivalent standing to an Honours Degree;

A minimum of 4 years managerial experience at middle to senior levels;

Coursework:

1. Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the boundaries, inter-connections, ontologies and epistemology of the disciplines within business as well as its interaction with the environment.

2. Demonstrate the understanding and application, including both technical and interpersonal skills, in business of specified bodies of content and their inter-connectedness in the disciplines.

3. Demonstrate an analytical, synthetic and judgemental ability to consider and generate options and make decisions about ways of viewing and interpreting systems and situations, and to consider different ways of applying business knowledge and skills to constructive interventions in such systems or situations.

4. Demonstrate the ability to integrate the theoretical knowledge, business practice and understanding of people in a creative approach to the identification of problems and opportunities, problem solving and meeting the present and future managerial challenges of business.

5. Demonstrate the application and implications of key aspects of specified business systems and situations.

6. Reflect on possible implications for self, system and stakeholders of different ways of viewing, interpreting and intervening in systems and situations, with the ability to develop appropriate contingencies.

7. Demonstrate an ability to reflect on and engage with own and other paradigms.

8. Demonstrate an ability to be self-reflexive, critical of own existence, thought and actions, and capable of self-organisation in the face of continual challenge from the environment.

9. Demonstrate consciousness of, and engagement with, meta and epistemic learning, and awareness of the influence of both cognitive and normative worldviews as frameworks for the way meaning is created.

Dissertation:

Complete an original thesis, being a contribution to knowledge in a chosen relevant research field.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

1. The learner must demonstrate an ability to consider a range of options and make decisions about:

The scope of the research such that it is original and unique and has no significant overlap with work already published;

The scope, ontology, epistemology, methodology and content of the chosen topic and field in such a way that they are compatible with the requirements of the discipline at doctoral level.

2. The learner must demonstrate an understanding of:

The content of the chosen topic;

The epistemological contribution of the thesis to the chosen field or discipline.

3. The learner must demonstrate ability to:

Critically evaluate the use of, and explore alternatives to, existing epistemological, ontological, and methodological tools in the chosen field or discipline;

Justify research-design decisions;

Reflect on the appropriateness of decisions made in designing and executing the research, and on adjustments to research design that might have been made from time to time;

Critically reflect on supervisor(s) feedback during the research and writing of the dissertation, in order to incorporate sufficient critical comment to ensure academic rigour but without diminution of original scholarship.

INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY

Qualification meets the Masters requirements for the United Kingdom and British Commonwealth Countries as well as for most of Europe, USA and Asia.

Dissertation, assignments, tests, examinations all marked and assessed by DMU South Africa (SA) and DMU United Kingdom (UK).

Once yearly formal DMU UK quality audit of the program.

DMU carries HEFCE (Higher Education Funding Council of England) excellent rating.

ARTICULATION OPTIONS

Qualification meets the Masters requirements of the Human Sciences Research Council in South Africa.

Articulation possibilities to NSB 3 (Business, Commerce and Management Studies and NSB's 5, 6 and 7).

After completion, entry to national and international DBA, DCom and PhD programmes.

These qualifications will be realigned to what the CHE has termed Category C qualifications to comply with the HEQSF.
