PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
The course has two aims: to provide students with an understanding of information technology applications in business within the context of a general grounding in management education, and to prepare them for leadership roles. Students develop their knowledge, skills and attitudes in the broad areas of information technology, business and communication. In addition graduates should be able relate their university studies to the world of business and to offer employers a competitive advantage in business operations. Graduates are expected to obtain initial employment in a business or information systems area, before moving into more general management positions.

Rationale for the qualification:

An understanding of information technology applications in business and the need for leadership in this field has been identified. The Bachelor of Business Systems course empowers students with knowledge, skills and attitudes in broad areas of information technology, business and communications, and, in addition, enables them to relate their university studies to the world of business and offer employers a competitive advantage in business operations. Graduates are expected to obtain employment in an IT consultant or business analyst role, thereby fulfilling this identified need.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Students on entry to Monash normally hold the equivalent of satisfactory completion of upper secondary education in a course that prepares the students for University usually following 13 years of primary and secondary school study. Such students will have demonstrated potential to undertake work at the degree level and typically, hold a range of relevant skills and knowledge that is both generic and subject specific. See sections on RPL and articulation.

Recognition of Prior Learning:

A learner may receive credits based on prior work experience where appropriate work has been undertaken.

At present the learner is required to submit details of such experience to the faculty, and each application is handled on a case-by-case basis where the school evaluates the experience against the background of course requirements.

In order to formalise this process, Monash is developing policies that regulate the procedure of awarding these credits. These policies can be expected to address issues such as the format of the submission, guidance with the preparation of the submission and the recognition criteria.

Credits that have been received previously at an appropriate level will also be considered for credit to a Monash undergraduate degree. Credit could be specified for a specific module, or be granted in general towards the qualification. The learner is required to submit an application for credit transfer together with documentation as specified on the application form. Applications are assessed by the Faculty Credit Transfer Committee.

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY
Monash has formal academic links with more than 100 institutions around the world, and was the Australian case study in the OECD Internationalisation Quality Review Process (1996).

Since the early 1990s, Monash has delivered programs, with local partners, in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. Monash South Africa degree courses are also offered by Monash in Australia, Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong.

The Australian Computer Society accredits this course as meeting the requirements for professional- level membership.

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS
Monash University has committed itself to fostering lifelong learning opportunities and developing more flexible program award structures and articulation options.

    Pathways to Monash Undergraduate Degrees:

In Australia the Faculty of Information Technology has arrangements with several vocational education and training providers that allow a student to undertake concurrent study of a degree level program at Monash and a diploma level program at a vocational education and training provider. The Faculty of Information Technology has also established articulation arrangements where students who have successfully completed subjects from a diploma course with a vocational education and training provider may apply for credit towards undergraduate degree courses in the faculty.

In South Africa, Monash will seek to develop similar articulation arrangements with appropriate South African institutions.

    Pathways within Monash:

Applicants who have been admitted to Monash are eligible to transfer between degree programs provided they fulfil the relevant entry requirements. Where a students wishes to transfer, he/she will be given specific credit for any overlapping subjects between the degree programs and block credit for any electives that have been undertaken. It is a requirement that a student who graduates from one degree and wishes to transfer to another must undertake a minimum of 1 year's study within the new degree program.

    Pathways from Monash Degrees:

Monash bachelor degree programs are recognised worldwide and provide eligibility for a range of graduate programs at universities across the world.

    MODERATION OPTIONS
Under Monash University regulations each faculty has a board of examiners that is responsible for evaluating the results of the performances of all candidates enrolled in the faculty. This board advises its faculty board on any matter relating to the method of assessment of candidates' performances.

The chief examiner is responsible for moderation of results across all campuses, where the chief examiner for each subject will be the chairperson of the department/school concerned or any other person appointed by the relevant faculty board, on the nomination of the chairperson.

Assessors and moderators will have qualifications and/or experience recognised by Monash as appropriate for the relevant discipline area. An assessor will normally hold a doctoral or masters qualification or equivalent accreditation and standing, and in future will also be required to obtain certification in higher education.

In South Africa, an external moderation process is in place.

Based on a sampling procedure specified by Monash Australia, a set of examination submissions with their marks are forwarded to Monash Australia for independent evaluation by the moderators that are recognised in Australia. This sampling procedure will always include exceptionally high and exceptionally low results.

Monash South Africa plans to use moderators registered according to the guidelines of the relevant ETQA in South Africa where these are available.
