The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Enable graduates to demonstrate having make a considerable contribution to the discipline of anthropology, through the completion of a detailed research project involving a period of practical fieldwork as well as library research. The results of the project should have advanced intellectual knowledge and be to the benefit of society.

An MA degree in Social or Cultural Anthroplogy or other related fields

(i) Demonstrate the ability to develop and undertake a specialised research project.

(ii) Show a superior grasp of theory grounding the research.

(iii) Demonstrate the ability to conduct the research independently using a variety of fieldwork techniques and to write it up to published standard.

v) Ability to present research findings at conferences. 

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
Integrated assessment

Oral and written presentations to:

(i) Demonstrate an understanding of various theoretical approaches in anthropology.

(ii) Demonstrate familiarity with the history and development of anthropology.

(iii) Demonstrate familiarity with research methodology and fieldwork techniques used in anthropology and show a proficiency in these techniques.

(v) Demonstrate research and writing skills. 

MODERATION OPTIONS 
There shall be at least two examiners, one internal and the other one external. The external examiner shall be a person attached to another University or a similar institution or it may also be a person who is an anthropologist or development practitioner working for the public sector or private sector or an NGO. 

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
A PhD degree plust at least five years teaching experience in the subject.

As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006; 2009; 2012; 2015.
