To encourage and recognize research that leads to knew knowledge techniques. SUBSIDIARY PURPOSE To provide future teaching staff for the dental school of South Africa. |

| Applicants who want to register for the PhD degree must be in possession of a M Dent, MDS or equivalent degree. |

1. Completed a research project in the dental field that generated new knowledge or techniques. 2. Written an acceptable thesis based on the research. |

| Integrated assessment.
An examination committee consisting of one or more internal examiners (of whom at least one must be in possession of a PhD degree) and at least two external examiners (who must all be in possession of PhD degrees) will evaluate the research and the thesis. |

| Staff members of the Faculty of Dentistry who are in possession of a PhD degree or with the necessary expertise, academic qualifications and experience are used as internal assessors. |
