PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
The purpose of the programme is to recognise the achievements of established scientists at the highest level of their profession. The qualification recognises high and consistent achievement by an individual or possibly elements of this as well as completion of an approved course work. The programme is purely an academic one and the qualification is regarded by the University of Cape Town as the highest and most prestigious award of the Faculty of Science.

The award of the D Sc degree is based on work which constitutes an original and important contribution to learning in the sense that it is likely to be regarded as a "benchmark" research in the relevant field in years to come and it demonstrates that the candidate has achieved a leadership role internationally in that field of scientific research

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
The programme requires that the entrant will already have a minimum of a Bachelors degree in any of the Faculties of Science, Humanities, Health Science, Engineering and the Built Environment at UCT, of no less than 4 years standing or an equivalent standard qualification other University or equivalent institution, as recognised by Senate, for no less than 4 years. Only in exceptional cases will a person be admitted who has not had significant involvement with UCT. In the latter case the candidate must have or have had established research and/or teaching associations with the University, and must pursue an approved course of work under the supervision of the University for no less than 1 year

The skills will normally be those required as outcomes for a PhD in a given discipline. Content will be dictated by the requirements of the specific discipline, but will in all cases constitute a body of work published in recognised journals and/or books
