PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The primary purpose of the qualification and programme is to provide South Africa with highly qualified people in the field of Computer Science in order to ensure that the national leadership base of innovative and knowledge-based economic and scholarly activities is sustained. Candidates shall acquire specialized knowledge, research skills and applied competence in the field of Computer Science with the aim of generating, evaluating and synthesising information and concepts or creating responses to abstract problems that expand and/or redefine existing knowledge. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
This qualification recognises, through the submission of portfolios of evidence, the formal/non-formal prior learning that learners who register for the programme leading to the award of the qualification to bring the learning situation. In particular, admission to the programme shall require, but not limited to:

M. Sc - degree in the relevant field

Level-7 equivalent qualification in the relevant field

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    The University's own staff will be used as assessors in a manner commensurate with the quality management system of the institution. This would apply to the appointment of outside assessors also.

    A system of second examiners within the institution will be used, together with a system of external examination at exit levels to the qualification. Where professional or statutory bodies are involved in determining the curriculum, they will also be involved in moderation.
