PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
a) Introduce the post basic qualifying learner to study in an area of specialisation in the field of Nursing Science, and in so doing to consolidate and deepen what has been learned in the first degree or higher diploma.

b) Equip qualifying learners with the necessary professional skills and attitudes based on scientific knowledge to function efficiently and effectively within their chosen area of specialisation

c) Establish a base for participating in multidisciplinary research in their chosen area of specialisation, through the acquisition of the necessary elementary research skills and tools and to provide a foundation for further learning in respect of Master's and Doctoral degrees

d) Stimulate an interest in academic study in the field of Nursing Science, and to ensure a constant supply of well equipped nursing professionals for both the private and public sectors, who are both critical thinkers and socially aware.

This qualification provides benefits for the South African community and economy by:

e) Providing the community with a specialist health care worker

f) Correcting past inequities and inequalities, in that persons of all population and ethnic groups are eligible to obtain this qualification, and in so doing, transforming the profile of South African post graduate nurse.

This qualification strives to fulfil the objectives of the National Qualification Framework by:

g) Playing an active role, and forming an integral part, of the national framework for learning by facilitating admission, mobility and progression within tertiary education and occupational opportunities

h) Promoting quality of education and contributing to the comprehensive personal development of each qualifying learner and the social and economic development of the community

i) Providing the community with nursing specialist professionals who are equipped to develop new, and transform existing nursing programmes that address the specific needs of the South African community

Senior Certificate with Matriculation Exemption or equivalent university admission qualification.

First degree: BCur-degree or any other suitable nursing degree or qualification as approved by the Senate of the university of Stellenbosch for this purpose

Additional requirements;

Applicants must be in possession of a certificate of registration as General Nurse Practitioner with the South African Nursing Council and (where applicable) registration in the basic nursing qualification which corresponds to their chosen area of specialisation.

With their chosen area of specialisation, the qualifying learner will:

a) Effectively apply health sciences and technology and demonstrate confident, systematic and deep knowledge within the specific of Nursing science.

b) Demonstrate deep knowledge of health service delivery within an appropriate model.

c) Demonstrate responsible participation in the promotion of the quality of life of the local community, the South African population and the global community.

d) Demonstrate understanding of cultural, religious and ethnic diversities and their influences on the health care consumers perception of health and illness

e) Identify, and find solutions to health-related problems through the use of critical thinking

f) Demonstrate leadership within the health care team and groups in the community

g) Demonstrate the capacity for responsibly and effectively organising and managing nursing service delivery

h) Communicate effectively with health service consumers and professional colleagues using visual, verbal, non-verbal and written skills

2). SPECIFIC OUTCOMES

The qualifying learner will have:

a) Confident, systematic and deep knowledge in his/her chosen area of specialisation within the field of Nursing Science.

b) An understanding of the principles and concepts underpinning the field of study and of its boundaries and limitations

c) An overview of recent and relevant literature in his/her chosen area of specialisation

d) A familiarity with the opportunities, challenges, demands and professional code of conduct within the field of Nursing Science.

The qualifying learner will be able to:

e) Collect, organise and critically appraise a wide range of information.

f) Conduct elementary research using appropriate methods in the area of specialisation

g) Take initiative and argue effectively and convincingly in informed debate.

h) Identify and address in both familiar and unfamiliar contexts

i) Effectively select and apply theoretical knowledge to their professional practice

j) Communicate basic research findings effectively to colleagues, in order to improve service programmes

k) Make sound theoretical judgements and evaluations to identify contradictions, challenge orthodox theory and practices, and suggest new methodologies

The qualifying learner will demonstrate;

l) Mastery of deep theoretical subject matter and an appropriate level of clinical competency within the chosen area of specialisation

m) Capacity for independent study through the completion of papers, assignments and projects

n) Understanding and application of appropriate academic and professional values and ethics

o) A variety of strategies to promote effective self-directed learning 

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
2).
  • The assessments used for the qualification of Diploma in Nursing Science ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved
  • The assessment used meets the standard and level of achievement for NQF level 7.
  • A range of formative and summative assessment methods are sued, such as assignments, projects, presentations, case-studies, clinical assessements and written examinations
  • The qualifying learner's written and oral presentations must be of an acceptable academic standard in terms of the use of Afrikaans or English as language and the structural organisation of presentations


    INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT

    The qualifying learners must achieve a minimum of 50% in both the theoretical and clinical components and must satisfactorily complete all compulsory assignments.

    Demonstrate proof of successful integration of all theoretical and clinical components 

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    Vertical articulation into Master's programmes in Nursing is possible.

    Horizontal articulation is also possible with other programmes e.g. Diploma in Nursing (Education, Administration, Critical Care, Post-basic Psychiatric Nursing, Community Nursing, Midwifery, etc)

    Horizontal articulation is enhanced with access to a variety of other related generic courses such as Public Health and Business Administration. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    The university of Stellenbosch has a system of external peer review and evaluation of departments. One of the aspects of the system is an evaluation of the standards and assessment practices of the department.

    In addition to one or more internal examiners (who are usually staff members of the university of Stellenbosch), standard university regulations require that one or more external examiner(s) of national scholarly repute in the fields of Nursing Science, have to assess the qualifying learners final level and standard of competency.

    Accreditation by the Professional Board (South African Nursing Council) 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    The academic staff of the university of Stellenbosch will be used in a manner in accordance with the quality assurance system of the university.

    In addition to one or more internal examiners (who are usually staff members of the university of Stellenbosch), standard university regulations require that one or more external examiner(s) of national scholarly repute have to assess the qualifying learner's final level and standard of competency
