The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The programme will develop the student`s analytical skills and the ability to conceptualise and undertake research in socio-economic development related fields. The research undertaken should contribute to a better understanding of the socio-economic development problems if not to their resolution. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
An Honours degree in Development Studies or other related field.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
Integrated assessment

Oral and written presentations to:

1. demonstrate ability to conceptualise and undertake research on an approved topic
2. demonstrate sound knowledge of research methodologies and ability to co-ordinate research programmes

A detailed research dissertation based on fieldwork and an ability to present and defend the research findings. 

ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
Completion of the Master`s programme will make one eligible for selection for a PhD programme at Unizul or at other universities. 

MODERATION OPTIONS 
There shall be at least one internal promoter and one external examiner. The external examiner shall be a person attached to another University or a similar institution or it may also be a person who is a development practitioner working for the public sector or private sector or an NGO. 

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
A PhD plus at least three years teaching experience in the subject.

As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006; 2009; 2012; 2015.
