The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
This qualification includes the various specialisations in Engineering. Please refer to "Notes" for details on the specialisations.

To recognise critical insigth, maturity of judgement, technical expertise and outstanding schorlarly contribution in a specialised field of engineering.

To enable students, as members of the international community of scholars, to participate in and contribute to universal pursuit of knowledge and by doing so, advance the frontiers of science. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Senior Certificate with Mtriculation Exemption or equivalent university admission qualification.

First degree: BEng and 9 years applicable experience OR

Masters degree: MEng or MScEng and 5 years applicable experience OR

Doctoral degree: PhD and 2 year applicable experience OR

Having in some other manner attained in his particular field of study a standard of competence deemed adequate by the Senate.

Additional requirements:

The candidate must have attained a high academic profile through previously published scholarly work

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
1. The assessment used for this qualification ensures that the purpose of the qualification is achieved.

2. A dissertation of previously published scholarly work is used. The assessment ensures that the required outcomes have been satisfied.

3. The assessment used meets the standard and level of achievement for NQF level 8


INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT


Candidates must submit a dissertation of previously published scholarly work based on their research. The dissertation has to meet all the standards and requirements of a doctoral dissertation - which includes proof of a successful integration of all the elements required to substantiate the central thesis and contribution of the study.

MODERATION OPTIONS 
The university of Stellenbosch has a system of external peer review and evaluation of departments. One of the aspects of the system is an evaluation of the standards and assessment practices of the department.

In addition to two or more internal examiners (which will usually be staff members of the university of Stellenbosch) standard university regulations require that one or more external examiners of international scholarly repute have to assess doctoral dissertations. The reports on the doctoral dissertation submitted by the internal and external examiners are considered by the Faculty Board (acting on the advice of an expert departmental committee specially constituted for each individual doctoral dissertation) and approved by the Senate 

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
The academic staff of the university of Stellenbosch will be used in a manner whic fits into the quality assurance system of the University.

In addition to two or more internal examiners (which will usually be staff members of the university of Stellenbosch) standard University regulations require that one or more external examiners of international scholarly repute have to assess doctoral dissertations in terms of a list of standard criteria and submit written reports.
